The Routledge Handbook of Feminist Economics (Paperback): Gunseli Berik, Ebru Kongar The Routledge Handbook of Feminist Economics (Paperback)
Gunseli Berik, Ebru Kongar
R1,344 Discovery Miles 13 440 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Routledge Handbook of Feminist Economics presents a comprehensive overview of the contributions of feminist economics to the discipline of economics and beyond. Each chapter situates the topic within the history of the field, reflects upon current debates, and looks forward to identify cutting-edge research. Consistent with feminist economics' goal of strong objectivity, this Handbook compiles contributions from different traditions in feminist economics (including but not limited to Marxian political economy, institutionalist economics, ecological economics and neoclassical economics) and from different disciplines (such as economics, philosophy and political science). The Handbook delineates the social provisioning methodology and highlights its insights for the development of feminist economics. The contributors are a diverse mix of established and rising scholars of feminist economics from around the globe who skilfully frame the current state and future direction of feminist economic scholarship. This carefully crafted volume will be an essential resource for researchers and instructors of feminist economics.

Gender, China and the World Trade Organization - Essays from Feminist Economics (Paperback): Gunseli Berik Gender, China and the World Trade Organization - Essays from Feminist Economics (Paperback)
Gunseli Berik; Contributions by Diana Strassmann; Edited by Xiao-yuan Dong, Gale Summerfield
R1,062 R697 Discovery Miles 6 970 Save R365 (34%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

China's joining the World Trade Organization at the end of 2001 signifies a milestone in the country's global integration after two decades of economic reforms that have fundamentally transformed the economic organization of China. This collection seeks to identify the gendered implications within China of the country's transition from socialism to a market economy and its opening up to international trade and investment. The changes have created greater wealth for some, while at the same time, serious gender, class, ethnic, and regional disparities have also emerged. Drawing from historical, analytical, and policy-oriented work, the essays in this collection explore women's well-being relative to men's in rural and urban China by looking at land rights, labor-market status and labor rights, household decision-making, health, the representation of women in advertising and beauty pageants. This book was previously published as a special issue of the journal, Feminist Economics, the official journal of the International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE). All contributions have been subjected to the journal's rigorous peer review process and comply with the journal's editorial policies, as overseen by the editor, Diana Strassmann, and the journal's editorial team, including the associate editors, the editorial board, numerous volunteer reviewers, and the journal's in-house editorial staff and freelance style editors. The special issue and book have been made possible by the generous financial support of Rice University and the Ford Foundation-Beijing.

Social Justice and Gender Equality - Rethinking Development Strategies and Macroeconomic Policies (Hardcover): Gunseli Berik,... Social Justice and Gender Equality - Rethinking Development Strategies and Macroeconomic Policies (Hardcover)
Gunseli Berik, Yana Van Der Meulen Rodgers, Ann Zammit
R4,737 Discovery Miles 47 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The contributors to this edited volume explore the effects of various development strategies and associated macroeconomic policies on women's well-being and progress towards gender equality. Detailed analyses of major UN reports on gender reveal the different approaches to assessing absolute and relative progress for women and the need to take into account the specifics of policy regimes when making such assessments. The book argues that neoliberal policies, especially the liberalization of trade and investment, make it difficult to close gender wage and earnings gaps, and new gender-sensitive policies need to be devised. These and other issues are all examined in more detail in several gendered development histories of countries from Latin America and Asia.

Inequality, Development, and Growth (Paperback): Gunseli Berik, Yana Van Der Meulen Rodgers, Stephanie Seguino Inequality, Development, and Growth (Paperback)
Gunseli Berik, Yana Van Der Meulen Rodgers, Stephanie Seguino
R1,291 Discovery Miles 12 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume presents a comprehensive analysis of the linkages between inequality, development, and growth from a feminist economics perspective. More specifically, it examines connections between intergroup inequality and macroeconomic outcomes, considering various channels through which gender, growth, and development interact. Using a range of analytical methods, country studies, and levels of aggregation, the contributors argue that inequalities based on gender, race, ethnicity, and class undermine the ability of people to provision and live fully to their capabilities. Authors examine the effect of macroeconomic policies and economic growth on inequalities in material resources and well-being, as well as the effects of inequality on economic growth. The volume offers specific explanations for how the macroeconomy can hinder the achievement of gender equality and in turn how gender relations in areas like education and wage gaps can have macro-level impacts. Finally, the volume offers a rich array of policy options for promoting gender equality as both an intrinsic goal and a step toward improving well-being and broadly-shared development. This book was published as a special issue of Feminist Economics.

Gender, Development and Globalization - Economics as if All People Mattered (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Gunseli Berik, Lourdes... Gender, Development and Globalization - Economics as if All People Mattered (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Gunseli Berik, Lourdes Beneria, Maria Floro
R4,976 Discovery Miles 49 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gender, Development, and Globalization is the leading primer on global feminist economics and development. Lourdes Beneria, a pioneer in the field of feminist economics, is joined in this second edition by Gunseli Berik and Maria Floro to update the text to reflect the major theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions and global developments in the last decade. Its interdisciplinary investigation remains accessible to a broad audience interested in an analytical treatment of the impact of globalization processes on development and wellbeing in general and on social and gender equality in particular. The revision will continue to provide a wide-ranging discussion of the strategies and policies that hold the most promise in promoting equitable and sustainable development. The authors make the case for feminist economics as a useful framework to address major contemporary global challenges, such as inequalities between the global South and North as well as within single countries; persistent poverty; and increasing vulnerability to financial crises, food crises, and climate change. The authors' approach is grounded in the intellectual current of feminism and human development, drawing on Amartya Sen's capability approach and focused on the importance of the care economy, increasing pressures faced by women, and the failures of neoliberal reforms to bring about sustainable development, reduction in poverty, inequality, and vulnerability to economic crisis.
