Der Briefwechsel ist zur Zeit Goethes ein zentrales Medium des gedanklichen Austausches von Denkern, Wissenschaftlern und Literaten. Neben Briefen werden Goethes Drama "Des Kunstlers Vergotterung" (1774), seine Ubersetzung des Hoheliedes (1775) und einige Gedichte, die in engem Zusammenhang mit den Briefen stehen, veroffentlicht. Mit Sophie von La Roche verband Goethe eine innige Freundschaft. Bettina Brentano verehrte den "Dichterfursten" zutiefst und trat erst durch die Verbindung zu seiner Mutter mit ihm in Kontakt.
