What is Values-Based Leadership? How does one become a Values-Based
Leader? Why Value-Based Leadership? Certainly these are critical
questions. It is now widely recognised that effective leaders, from
Martin Luther King through political leaders and corporate
executives, have a foundation of values that guide their
decision-making, and indeed, their life. However, up to this point
there has not been a clear definition of Values-Based Leadership,
nor has there been a method for developing Values-Based Leaders.
This book addresses these issues by defining Values-Based
Leadership; by explaining why this form of leadership leads to
effective groups, families and organisations; and by providing a
process for helping one discover both their life values and their
leadership values. Presented in an interesting, and easy-to-read
"story format," the book traces the life of the CEO of a major
medical supply company who has "burned out" as a leader, and who
blames others for his problems. After being told very bluntly by a
former mentor that he is the problem, not others, the CEO seeks out
the help of an executive coach. Working with the coach he goes
through a process by which he rediscovers his purpose in life, as
well as his life and leadership values. And through the process he
renews his enthusiasm and effectiveness as a leader. The format of
the book allows the reader to go through the same step-by-step
discovery process as does the central figure in the book, and to
move toward becoming an effective and successful Values-Based
Leader. Leaders and executives will find the information and
discovery process outlined in the book very helpful in clarifying
one's purpose and values, and in giving them a foundation on which
to lead. The book also may be used as a supplemental text in
courses on leadership. CONTENTS Preface. Foreword. About the

Our understanding of the basic biology of owls is poor compared to
that of other bird species. The Little Owl, Athene noctua, has
become one of the best models for biological and conservation
research, due to its commonness and the fact that it occupies
nest-boxes very easily. In this unique book the authors synthesise
the substantial literature, and detail current information
regarding the Little Owl. They discuss its wide-ranging ecology,
genetics and subspecies and population status by country. In
addition, they outline a strategy and monitoring program for its
conservation. The book features an outstanding bibliography of
literature on the Little Owl, listing publications dated from 1769
to 2007, in many languages, including Russian, English, French,
German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Dutch. Whilst being an
invaluable resource for academic researchers, its straightforward
style holds undoubted appeal for amateurs and enthusiasts.
A richly researched, evocative account of the individuals and
institutions involved in the settling of the non-Indian West-and of
the impact of the development of the West on the nation as a whole.
Making of the American West surveys the experiences of major social
groups in the lands from the Mississippi to the Pacific, from the
United States' penetration of the region in the early 19th century
to its incorporation into national political, economic, and
cultural fabric by the early 20th century. This revealing volume
offers fascinating portraits of the people and institutions that
drove the Western conquest (traders and trappers, ranchers and
settlers, corporations, the federal government), as well as of
those who resisted conquest or hoped for the emergence of a
different society (Indian peoples, Latinos, Asians, wage laborers).
Throughout, expert contributors continually return to the growing
myth of the West and the impact of its promise of freedom and
opportunity on those who sought to "Americanize" it. A series of
primary documents that give insight into direct experiences of
groups featured and debates about Western issues at the time A rich
variety of images and illustrations depicting the people and places
covered in the book and capturing the various myths of the West
circulated at the time
Landmark text focusing on the development of brain and behavior
during infancy, childhood, and adolescence Developmental Cognitive
Neuroscience provides an accessible introduction to the main
methods, theories, and empirical findings of developmental
cognitive neuroscience. The focus is on human development from in
utero to early adulthood, but key comparative work is also
included. This new edition covers research in clinical/medical
populations, educational applications and major advancements in
methods and analysis, in particular with increasing longitudinal
research focusing on understanding the mechanisms of cognitive
development. It also contains a new chapter on global and
cross-cultural perspectives outlining how developmental cognitive
neuroscience has been applied in different settings and howÂ
techniques can be successfully adapted. The text features a variety
of student-friendly features such as chapter-end discussion,
applications of basic research, and introductions to key
experimental methods. An accompanying related resource website for
students and educators that includes a test bank of multiple choice
questions is also provided. Other sample topics covered in
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience include: Biology of change,
methods, and populations, from gene to brain, building a brain, and
vision, orienting, and attention Perceiving and acting in a world
of objects, learning, and long-term memory, language, and
prefrontal cortex, working memory, and decision-making Perceiving
and acting in the social world, educational neuroscience,
interactive specialization, and integrating development cognitive
neuroscience Mid-childhood and adolescent development, social
cognition and neuroimaging, and broader cognitive neuroscience
approaches and theory With expansive yet accessible coverage
of the subject, Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience is an ideal
resourcefor upper level undergraduate and early postgraduate
readers. The text will further appeal to professionals in fields
that have adopted developmental cognitive neuroscience approaches,
such as education, clinical psychology, pediatric medicine and
global health.
Unlike the media would have you believe, most black males find
great value in education. They want to believe that they have a
special gift and that they can make a difference in the world. The
problem is that they have ill feelings about how society has
deprived them of the most qualified teachers and the best ways to
be engaged in their own education. As a consequence of repeatedly
being marginalized, criticized, and put down by society and
teachers, they do not feel motivated to attend school or to produce
outstanding academic work.
"The Secrets for Motivating, Educating, and Lifting the Spirit
of African American Males" contains essays that center on how to
help educators and parents to equip young black males with the
drive necessary to craft fulfilling lives for themselves so they
don't slip through the cracks in the educational system.
"Historically, we are still dealing with what happens to the
image of Black people in the minds of white people. A book like
this helps to make certain that the information teachers provide to
all students-regardless of their race-will help them understand
that the history of this country has made generation after
generation of black students see themselves as academically and
socially inferior to white people. Most importantly, it's the
teachers-not just black teachers, but all teachers- who have to
understand the power they have to change the mindset of society.
Changing how society thinks about Black people, particularly Black
males, is a task teachers can truly accomplish because they have
the power to create lesson plans that challenge how students think
about each other. For such lessons are important for changing the
attitudes and beliefs of the entire community in which we live." -
REVEREND C.T. VIVIAN, A Pioneer of the Civil Rights Movement,
Author, Educator, and a Close Friend of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.
"This book provides a fresh perspective for understanding the
problems associated with the education of Black males. As a
minister, I have not encountered a project that gathers the
collective wisdom of a group of over 20 Black male educators who
are dedicated to helping the world save young Black males. When all
their ideas come together, they are bound to create a storm of new
thinking about how all of us can work together. As a spiritual
leader, my role is to help young Black males understand that the
same God that was in Dr. King is the same God that is in them. This
is a difficult lesson for some Black males who have been
brainwashed to see themselves as having no say about the outcome of
their lives. This book will help us, including those in the
ministry, to reevaluate the thinking patterns of our boys so that
we can better prepare them for the critical thinking that is
required for life in the 21st century." - REVEREND ROBERT KILGORE,
Assistant Pastor at Hillside International Truth Center, Atlanta,
GA
The word "blood" awakens ancient ideas, but we know little about
its historical representation in Western cultures. Anthropologists
have customarily studied how societies think about the bodily
substances that unite them, and the contributors to this volume
develop those questions in new directions. Taking a radically
historical perspective that complements traditional cultural
analyses, they demonstrate how blood and kinship have constantly
been reconfigured in European culture. This volume challenges the
idea that blood can be understood as a stable entity, and shows how
concepts of blood and kinship moved in both parallel and divergent
directions over the course of European history.

Carrollton, Georgia, United States in October 2011. This was the
fifth Integers Conference, held bi-annually since 2003. It featured
plenary lectures presented by Ken Ono, Carla Savage, Laszlo
Szekely, Frank Thorne, and Julia Wolf, along with sixty other
research talks. This volume consists of ten refereed articles,
which are expanded and revised versions of talks presented at the
conference. They represent a broad range of topics in the areas of
number theory and combinatorics including multiplicative number
theory, additive number theory, game theory, Ramsey theory,
enumerative combinatorics, elementary number theory, the theory of
partitions, and integer sequences.
Sitting in the honored stalls of the Crystal Sanctuary, Calvin
Gooding should be rejoicing in the message he receives from the
Holy King of Duprin. But his heart is heavy. He awaits the carriage
in which he must ride to deliver the fated news to his family. Time
has run out. In the midst of this sorrow, exhaustion, and
uncertainty, a sorceress from the Dark Province appears to Calvin.
She promises to make his terminally ill twin sister, Marilyn, well
again. As twins, Calvin and Mari share a special bond, and Calvin
will do almost anything to save his sister's life. But in order to
free Mari from death's grip, the sorceress claims that Calvin must
travel to the Dark Province-a land where souls and flesh are
devoured by the lawless and the spirit of man is bound in shackles.
It's a reckless land dominated by morally corrupt warlords and open
sexuality. Wrapped tightly in his religion, Calvin must make a
life-altering decision. He can choose to follow the sorceress into
the sinful abyss to save his sister, or he can accept a life of
guilt and certain torment over Mari's death.
