This book explores the way in which the study and practice of love
creates a common ground for different faiths and different
traditions within the same faith. For the contributors, "common
ground" in this context is not a minimal core of belief or a lowest
common denominator of faith, but a space or area in which to live
together, consider together the meaning of the love to which
various faiths witness, and work together to enable human
flourishing. Such a space, the contributors believe, is possible
because it is the place of encounter with the divine. This book is
the fruit of a Project for the Study of Love in Religion which aims
to create this space in which different traditions of love
converge, from Islam, Judaism, and the Christianity of both East
and West. Tools employed by the contributors in exploring this
space of love include exegesis of ancient texts, theology, accounts
of mystical experience, philosophy, and evolutionary science of the
human. Insights about human and divine love that emerge include its
nature as a form of knowing, its sacrificial and erotic dimensions,
its inclination towards beauty, its making of community and its
importance for a just political and economic life.

Rock Lighthouses of Britain & Ireland is a new edition of the
classic work on the subject - but with some of the most famous
Irish rock lighthouses included. The text has been updated to
include the modern technology being used by the lighthouse
authorities, as well as all the historical advances made over the
centuries at British and Irish rock lights, complemented by scores
of new and many stunning photographs. Also included are historic
plans and drawings, many of them highly colourful and artistic, as
used by the original lighthouse builders. At the end are
comprehensive and detailed tables about the rock lighthouses
maintained by all three lighthouse authorities. Building on the
acclaim received for the earlier editions, it brings the history of
these iconic structures completely up-to-date, from the day the
first granite block was laid, through their construction,
automation, the disappearance of the lighthouse keeper, right up to
today's automated operation. Here are some of the world's most
famous rock lighthouses. There are stories of men battling against
Nature's most powerful forces to build a structure designed to save
lives on a seemingly impossible site. Rock Lighthouses of Britain
& Ireland spans the centuries between the world's first rock
lighthouse on the Eddystone reef, to the very last rock lighthouse,
constructed in the traditional style, on Ireland's Fastnet Rock and
accordingly will remain the premier book about rock lighthouses.

In the summer of 1888, Ameen Fares Rihani (1876-1940) left the
shores of his native Lebanon to begin a new life in the bustling
metropolis of New York City. Few could have guessed at the time
that the young Rihani would soon become one of the most famous and
distinctive Arab writers of the era, transforming tales from his
crossings between East and West into a clarion call for
understanding and cooperation between a rising world power and an
Arab world that was suspended between cultural renaissance and
political recolonization. Less than a year after the tragic events
of September 11, 2001, the Ameen Rihani Institute and the American
University Center for Global Peace convened a distinguished group
of Arab, American, and European scholars for an international
symposium in Washington, D.C. Inspired by the conviction that
Rihani's humane vision still addresses many of the most vitally
important issues in global affairs, the participants in this
symposium prepared stimulating writings on every facet of Rihani's
intellectual journey, literary career, political advocacy, and life
as a protagonist of Arab-American understanding. The result is this
remarkable book demonstrating the extraordinary nature of Ameen
Rihani's work as a cultural ambassador; the depth of his affinities
for such writers as Carlyle, Emerson, Thoreau, and Tolstoy; and the
enduring relevance of his commitments to tolerance, universalism,
reconciliation, and peace.
In the 1980s David Thomas was an unemployed plumber with a
seemingly impossible dream: to become a fashion stylist. He ran
away to London, landed a job selling cassettes in Tower Records,
spent weekends and evenings washing dishes and working as a
lavatory attendant, and every spare moment hammering on the doors
of fashion editors until one of them opened a tiny crack. As well
as telling the touching and funny story of the "Billy Elliot of
fashion's" bumpy ride to success, Vanity Project examines the
fascinating relationship between the fairytale worlds fashion and
celebrity. It describes how the discipline of styling has evolved
from the 1980s to now, from the streets of London to the red
carpets of Hollywood. This story is told largely in the words of
those in the front row seats: actors, musicians, designers,
photographers, editors, directors, artists, and music business
power brokers. In short, people who have shaped popular culture
over more than three decades. This beautifully designed book
features more than 300 iconic images - photographs, sketches,
magazine covers, Polaroids, iPhone snaps, and press cuttings - that
illustrate the creative process from the mind of the stylist and
the client's brief to the end result. The rich visual archive is
brought right up to date with a specially commissioned portfolio of
never-before-seen portraits by some of the world's leading
contemporary photographers. Vanity Project is a tale of stars, of
clothes, and of the skill and sweat that goes into creating those
glittering moments on stage and screen. Above all, it's the story
of how, with the right kind of help and belief, one boy's dream
came true. The publisher will donate 10% of the cover price to The
Prince's Trust. The total amount donated to The Prince's Trust is
expected to be GBP5 per book. The Prince's Trust is a registered
charity incorporated by Royal Charter in England and Wales
(1079675) and Scotland (SC041198).
The author contends that Shakespeare's essential greatness is
evident when focusing on the impact his best plays make when acted.
This work also illustrates his preoccupation with the quest for
human perfection and the mystery of sanctification. It concentrates
on the texts and their theatrical rendering.
Isabel and Julian Bannerman have been described as 'mavericks in
the grand manner, touched by genius' (Min Hogg, World of Interiors)
and 'the Bonnie and Clyde of garden design' (Ruth Guilding, The
Bible of British Taste). Their approach to design, while rooted in
history and the classical tradition, is fresh, eclectic and
surprising. Designers to the highest in the land, they have made
gardens for the Prince of Wales at Highgrove, Lord Rothschild at
Waddesdon Manor, the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk at Arundel Castle
in Sussex, John Paul Getty II at Wormsley in Buckinghamshire, the
great walled garden at Houghton, home of the Marquess of
Cholmondeley, and they designed the British 9/11 Memorial Garden in
New York. 'Their work of grand architectural gestures, of mock
ruins and oaken temples has made them famous. But it is the houses
and gardens they have made for themselves that ... eclipse any of
these aristocratic delights' (Mary Keen, Daily Telegraph). Their
garden at Hanham Court near Bath was acclaimed by Gardens
Illustrated as the top garden of 2009, ahead of Sissinghurst. When
they moved from Hanham it was to the fairytale castle of Trematon
overlooking Plymouth Sound, where they have created yet another
magical garden. Landscape of Dreams celebrates, in the Bannerman's
inimitable, evocative, humorous and highly personal style, the
imaginative and practical process of designing, making and planting
all of these gardens, and many more.
Agile, flexible and never afraid of controversial innovations (such
as abandoning traditional 'black tie' evening dress for its players
or giving amplified concerts with creative lighting at the
Hammersmith Apollo), the LCO has surfed the waves of history. It
has travelled from the early days of broadcasting - which other
orchestras shunned, fearing it spelt the end of 'live' music -
through the difficult days of the Second World War, when London's
largest concert hall was bombed, and the thrill of being invited to
play at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011,
to a triumphant return and reinvention after the Covid-19 pandemic
when its comeback programmes included Concerto for Turntables by
the composer Sergei Prokofiev's grandson Gabriel Prokofiev,
featuring DJ Mr Switch. Author and music critic Jessica Duchen
traces the LCO's history from the beginning under its founding
conductor, the entrepreneurial Anthony Bernard from London's East
End, whose contacts included Britain's first female MP, the
American Nancy Astor (who kindly lent her house for the orchestra's
first concert) and leading composers like Edward Elgar and Ralph
Vaughan Williams, up to its current Artistic Director, Christopher
Warren-Green, who ensures the LCO continues to delight its devoted
audiences at home and abroad with an eclectic and diverse programme
of music. Over the years it has performed dozens of world or UK
premieres by composers including Stravinsky, Falla, Delius and even
Mozart. This engaging book teems with entertaining stories: the
composer who relished riding naked on a motor bike in the
Gloucestershire countryside, the oboe player who taught her
daughter's boyfriend, Paul McCartney, to play the recorder for a
much-loved Beatles song, and the times the LCO travelled the length
and breadth of the US in a country & western tour bus straight
out of Nashville. It adds up to a fascinating celebration of over
100 years of classical music, as well as giving unique insider
glimpses into this vibrant and much loved orchestra.

Sick of McMansions? Marianne Cusato, creator of the award-winning
Katrina Cottages, is a champion of traditional architectural
principles: structural common sense, aesthetics of form,
appropriateness to a neighbourhood and sustainability. She presents
the definitive guide to what makes houses look and feel right,
revealing the dos and don'ts of liveable home design. Hundreds of
elegant line drawings, rendering the varieties of architectural
features and displaying "avoid" and "use" versions of the same
elements side by side, make this an indispensable resource for
designing and building a timelessly beautiful home.
Includes a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales and an introduction
by Jane Goodall Richard St. Barbe Baker was an inspirational
visionary and pioneering environmentalist who is credited with
saving and planting billions of trees. He saved lives, too, through
his ceaseless global campaign to raise the alarm about
deforestation and desertification and by finding effective,
culturally sensitive ways for people to contribute to a more
peaceful and greener world. He was also an Edwardian eccentric
whose obsession with trees caused him to neglect his family; the
devout son of an evangelical preacher who became a New Age hero; an
unapologetic colonial officer fired for defending indigenous
Africans; a forester who rarely had a steady income; a failed
entrepreneur and inventor; a proud soldier and peace activist; a
brilliant writer, speaker, and raconteur who made wild claims about
the effectiveness of his conservation efforts. His encounters with
historical figures like FDR, Nehru, and George Bernard Shaw are
eye-popping, as were his accomplishments.
As Prince William, founder of The Earthshot Prize, said, 'The Earth
is at a tipping point and we face a stark choice: either we
continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet, or we
remember our unique power as human beings and our continual ability
to lead, innovate, and problem-solve. People can achieve great
things. The next ten years present us with one of our greatest
tests - a decade of action to repair the Earth.' The Earthshot
concept is simple: Urgency + Optimism = Action. We have ten years
to turn the tide on the environmental crisis, but we need the
world's best solutions and one shared goal - to save our planet.
It's not too late, but we need collective action now. The
Earthshots are unifying, ambitious goals for our planet which, if
achieved by 2030, will improve life for all of us, for the rest of
life on Earth, and for generations to come. They are to: * Protect
and Restore Nature * Clean our Air * Revive our Oceans * Build a
Waste-Free World * Fix our Climate EARTHSHOT: HOW TO SAVE OUR
PLANETis the first definitive book about how these goals can tackle
the environmental crisis. It is a critical contribution to the most
important story of the decade.
As people increasingly migrate to urban settings and more than half
of the world's population now lives in cities, it is vital to plan
and provide for sustainable and resilient food systems which
reflect this challenge. This volume presents experience and
evidence-based "state of the art" chapters on the key dimensions of
urban food challenges and types of intra- and peri-urban
agriculture. The book provides urban planners, local policy makers
and urban development practitioners with an overview of crucial
aspects of urban food systems based on an up to date review of
research results and practical experiences in both developed and
developing countries. By doing so, the international team of
authors provides a balanced textbook for students of the growing
number of courses on sustainable agriculture, food and urban
studies, as well as a solid basis for well-informed policy making,
planning and implementation regarding the development of
sustainable, resilient and just urban food systems.
