This volume of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology (Concepts in Biochemical Pharmacology) will show that pharma cology has finally arrived as a true discipline in its own right, and is no longer the handmaiden of organic chemistry and physiology. Instead it is an amalgam of all the biological sciences including biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, physiology, pathology and clinical medicine. In the volumes that make up Concepts in Bioche mical Pharmacology we hope to convince Medical Schools what should now be obvious, that pharmacology is no longer that dull topic bridging the basic sciences with medicine, but is probably the most important subject in the medical curriculum. Der Umfang des Beobachtungsmaterials oder die Kompli- ziertheit des statistischen Problems verweisen den empirisch arbeitenden Wissenschaftler, aber auch den Studenten im fortgeschrittenen Semester, haufig auf die Verwendung von elektronischen Datenverarbeitungs- anlagen. Das vorliegende Skriptum, das sich haupt- sachlich an Medizinstudenten des zweiten Studienab- schnittes, an Doktoranden der Medizin und an inter- essierte Mediziner richtet, solI den Anfanger mit dem Gebrauch der leicht erlernbaren Programmiersprache BASIC vertraut machen und eigene Kommunikation mit einer Datenverarbeitungsanlage ermoglichen. Die ersten beiden Kapitel beinhalten eine EinfUhrung in den Problemkreis "Computer und Programmierung". Die Darstellung der Programmiersprache BASIC solI nicht vollstandig sein, sondern solI zur selbstandigen Programmierung auch komplexerer statistischer Verfah- ren ausreichen. So erfolgt beispielsweise keine Be- schreibung der BASIC -Matrizenoperationen, die diesen Rahmen sprengen und daruberhinaus zum Verstandnis ge- wisse Kenntnisse aus der linearen Algebra voraussetzen wtirde. AuBerdem wird weitgehend darauf verzichtet, maschinengebundene Angaben wie zum Beispiel Anzahl der bits in einem Speicherwort oder maximale GroBe von Zahlen in bestimmten Darstellungen zu machen, da diese stark von den jeweils benutzten Rechenautomaten ab- hangig sind. Aus abnlichen GrUnden wird auf eine Dis- kussion der verschiedenen Systembefehle verzichtet.
