Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
This book is an outgrowth of research contributions and teaching
experiences by all the authors in applying modern fluid mechanics
to problems of pollutant transport and mixing in the water
environment. It should be suitable for use in first year graduate
level courses for engineering and science students, although more
material is contained than can reasonably be taught in a one-year
course, and most instructors will probably wish to cover only
selected potions. The book should also be useful as a reference for
practicing hydraulic and environmental engineers, as well as anyone
involved in engineering studies for disposal of wastes into the
environment. The practicing consulting or design engineer will find
a thorough explanation of the fundamental processes, as well as
many references to the current technical literature, the student
should gain a deep enough understanding of basics to be able to
read with understanding the future technical literature evolving in
this evolving field.
Conjugal Rites explores the legal shape of marriage as it has been
determined by countless decisions concerning entry and exit into
the ancient rite. Heather Brook examines the countless rules and
protocols governing marriage that make it valid in the eyes of the
law. She argues that the various sexual performatives associated
with marriage can establish, reinforce, or rupture conjugal unity
while exploring the historical and politcal regulations and
prohibitions marriage has faced. Brook unites past and present,
public and private, to investigate the changing meanings and
effects of conjugality, and challenge the way we think about sex,
gender and relationships.
Originally published in 1968, this volume traces the history and
growth of Apartheid in South Africa. The acts which enforced
Apartheid - the Group Areas Act, Population and Registration Act
are given in full. The book also includes documents which reflected
reaction to these measures: Parliamentary debates, newspaper
reports and policy statements by the leading political parties and
religious denominations. The documents are headed by a full
historical and analytical introduction.
Examining theatre economics, rhetorical acting, cross-dressing, the
staging of 'self', and the alignment of motherhood and work, this
book reveals how actresses drew on changing models of gender to
achieve phenomenal levels of success over the eighteenth-century.
By doing so it sheds new light on the cultural significance of
female performance.
Among the political ideologies generally considered to be of
continuing significance, anarchism alone has never been
implemented. Perhaps its rigors are too strong and its advocates
are too weak. That it is still considered worth studying is
testimony to its intellectual credibility, particularly its
single-minded emphasis on individual liberty. Obsession with
liberty and skepticism of government are as alive today as they
were in the nineteenth century. This book offers a comprehensive
introduction to anarchism in the United States, revealing its
historical roots and relevance to today's problems. The
relationship between anarchy and individualism in the nineteenth
century is well known. How this affected the larger system is what
the bulk of the anthology is about.
"Liberty "was a magazine featuring some of the outstanding
anarchist thinkers in America at the turn of the century. This
anthology offers a selection of writings spanning the magazine's
twenty-seven year life and features some of its major writers:
Benjamin Tucker, Victor Yarros, Steven Byington, John Beverley
Robinson, and Gertrude Kelly. The chapters are divided into four
sections: political theory, economic theories and reforms, social
implications, and strategies of individualist anarchism. The
authors criticize censorship, state support of patriarchal
marriage, and the general invasion of privacy. Though quite
radical, the writers were not revolutionaries in a conventional
sense; they emphasized passive resistance, rather than violent
assault, as proper.
The Individualist Anarchists is not merely of historical
Interest, but offers a fundamental critique of government and
authority--one that remains a relevant part of today's libertarian
movement. It will be of Interest to political theorists,
economists, sociologists, and scholars of American history; above
all, to those who may not yet have appreciated the worth of an
analysis made so many years ago.
One of the first books on general pathology written specifically
for veterinary nurses and those new to the subject. It builds on
prior knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry to explain
the pathological changes that occur in sick animals. The book
provides an understanding of the effects of various disease
processes, and relates these to clinical presentation, diagnosis
and prognosis, and treatment rationales. Presented in an easy to
read format, with many illustrations and summary boxes to aid
comprehension. Each chapter has a useful "test yourself" section to
test understanding.
