This volume examines the role of specialized knowledge in evaluating and designing information policy. The author begins with a description of the context in which American information policy is made with examples of existing domestic and international policies. He explores scientific and technical information, presents a case study of the SATCOM Report and concludes with suggestions for a new, broadly conceived research agenda within the framework of the method of investigation described in the book.
Describing approximately 1,000 books published between 1986 and late 1993, this work provides readers with a selective guide to English-language publications on the subject of Eastern Europe. It covers general studies of the area as well as works on the individual countries of Albania, Bulgaria, the former Czechoslovakia, the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany), Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the former Yugoslavia. In addition to bibliographic and descriptive information, the authors also include citations to book reviews. A companion to their "Russia and the Former Soviet Union" (Libraries Unlimited, 1994), this volume also focuses on the social sciences and the humanities. As interest about this part of the world continues to build and English-language publications about it proliferate, Burger and Sullivan's guide is a pertinent addition to academic and public library collections.
The tumultuous events taking place in Eastern Europe have resulted in an avalanche of publications in English about that part of the world. This volume, a continuation of the late Stephan M. Horak's series of bibliographies covering books published in English about the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe up to 1985, picks up where Mr. Horak left off. It provides a selective bibliography of books concerning Russia and the Soviet Union that were published in English from 1986 to 1991. Descriptive annotations of more than 1,400 titles contain bibliographic information, brief abstracts, and citations of major reviews when available. Focusing on the social sciences and humanities, this volume excludes pure science and technology, occasional papers, serial publications, publications under 50 pages in length, and those not readily available to the general academic and public library user. At a time when interest is high and material is proliferating, this guide is a must.
In the early 1990s the collapse of the Iron Curtain and the dissolution of the Soviet Union opened Eastern Europe, Russia, and the newly independent states of the former U.S.S.R. to the West. To meet the demand of rising interest, many new English-language publications about this part of the world have appeared over the last decade. This single volume takes a select portion of recent publications and provides useful descriptions and bibliographic information for historians, scholars, researchers, and students. Titles deal with Russia, the independent states from the former Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the states of the former Yugoslavia. Timely and important topics span politics, society, and culture, from the Holocaust to the transition from socialist to market economies and the civil war in the former Yugoslavia.
Focusing on English-language publications of the last decade, this guide identifies and describes key reference and information sources in the field of education today. In addition to general reference sources O'Brien covers major social science reference sources that have a direct or overlapping relationship to education. Nearly 500 entries are arranged by subject and type of work. Most are new to this work. For example, there are now a number of Internet sources with URL addresses and an increased number of journals, which reflects the increasing reliance on periodicals as information sources. The book has also been completely reorganized, with new chapters covering "Educational Technology and Media"; "Multilingual and Multicultural Education"; "Adult Alternative, Continuing and Distance Education"; "Curriculum, Instruction, and Content areas"; "Educational Research, Measurement, and Testing"; and so forth. Excluded are lists of education associations and organizations, general social science refe
Covering everything from auditing and budgeting to contracts, revenue and expenditures, forecasting, and ethics in financial management, this book addresses the full spectrum of topics and skills needed by today's library managers. The "sink or swim" method of skill acquisition can be effective, but it is inefficient, stressful, and typically leaves one lacking in foundational concepts and principles. This book provides a logical, organized way for library school students, librarians, and others such as library board members to gain the specific knowledge critical to the financial management of libraries and information centers. This book covers the full spectrum of topics and skills needed by today's managers-from the basics of budgeting, accounting, and financial statements to audits, forecasting, risk management, and revenue sources. There are even chapters on ethical considerations and advocacy. The skills readers will learn from this guide are of critical importance in this era of financial constraints and accountability at every level of the organization. Students in management and financial management courses and practicing library managers seeking to improve their financial management skills will find this book an essential tool for success.
