Writing in the Biological Sciences - A Comprehensive Resource for Scientific Communication (Paperback, 4th edition): H. Hofmann Writing in the Biological Sciences - A Comprehensive Resource for Scientific Communication (Paperback, 4th edition)
H. Hofmann
R1,705 Discovery Miles 17 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Writing in the Biological Sciences: A Comprehensive Guide to Scientific Communication serves as a comprehensive one-stop reference guide to scientific writing and communication for budding professionals in the life sciences and related fields. The book is designed to function both as a free-standing textbook for a course on writing in the sciences and as an accompanying text or reference guide in courses with writing-intensive components. It covers all the basics of scientific communication that students need to know and master for successful scientific careers. The book lays the foundation for professional writing by starting with basic scientific writing principles and then by applying these principles to lab reports, summaries, and critiques and eventually also to full-fledged scientific research articles, review articles, and grant proposals. Practical advice for organizing academic presentations and posters as well as for putting together job applications is also included.

Periodic Locally Compact Groups - A Study of a Class of Totally Disconnected Topological Groups (Hardcover): Wolfgang Herfort,... Periodic Locally Compact Groups - A Study of a Class of Totally Disconnected Topological Groups (Hardcover)
Wolfgang Herfort, Karl H. Hofmann, Francesco G. Russo
R4,329 Discovery Miles 43 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This authoritative book on periodic locally compact groups is divided into three parts: The first part covers the necessary background material on locally compact groups including the Chabauty topology on the space of closed subgroups of a locally compact group, its Sylow theory, and the introduction, classifi cation and use of inductively monothetic groups. The second part develops a general structure theory of locally compact near abelian groups, pointing out some of its connections with number theory and graph theory and illustrating it by a large exhibit of examples. Finally, the third part uses this theory for a complete, enlarged and novel presentation of Mukhin's pioneering work generalizing to locally compact groups Iwasawa's early investigations of the lattice of subgroups of abstract groups. Contents Part I: Background information on locally compact groups Locally compact spaces and groups Periodic locally compact groups and their Sylow theory Abelian periodic groups Scalar automorphisms and the mastergraph Inductively monothetic groups Part II: Near abelian groups The definition of near abelian groups Important consequences of the definitions Trivial near abelian groups The class of near abelian groups The Sylow structure of periodic nontrivial near abelian groups and their prime graphs A list of examples Part III: Applications Classifying topologically quasihamiltonian groups Locally compact groups with a modular subgroup lattice Strongly topologically quasihamiltonian groups

Co-Financing Hollywood Film Productions with Outside Investors - An Economic Analysis of Principal Agent Relationships in the... Co-Financing Hollywood Film Productions with Outside Investors - An Economic Analysis of Principal Agent Relationships in the U.S. Motion Picture Industry (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Kay H Hofmann
R1,970 Discovery Miles 19 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past two decades, investors from outside the motion picture industry have increasingly supplied equity to U.S. film productions. Today, these so-called co-financing arrangements are a common phenomenon in Hollywood. While the large studios usually carry out the operative tasks of movie production and distribution, the financiers as co-owners of the completed films have rights to the residual profits. Kay H. Hofmann analyzes the conflicts of interest and the organizational problems that may arise between the experienced major studios and investors with comparably low industry expertise. Guided by principal agent theory, the empirical analysis provides evidence for adverse selection and multiple aspects of moral hazard during production as well as distribution. Based on these findings, the author develops solutions that are not only relevant for current and future investors but also for studios and film producers who rely on the long-term availability of external funds.

Cohomology Theories for Compact Abelian Groups (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1973): Karl H. Hofmann Cohomology Theories for Compact Abelian Groups (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1973)

R1,550 Discovery Miles 15 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Of all topological algebraic structures compact topological groups have perhaps the richest theory since 80 many different fields contribute to their study: Analysis enters through the representation theory and harmonic analysis; differential geo metry, the theory of real analytic functions and the theory of differential equations come into the play via Lie group theory; point set topology is used in describing the local geometric structure of compact groups via limit spaces; global topology and the theory of manifolds again playa role through Lie group theory; and, of course, algebra enters through the cohomology and homology theory. A particularly well understood subclass of compact groups is the class of com pact abelian groups. An added element of elegance is the duality theory, which states that the category of compact abelian groups is completely equivalent to the category of (discrete) abelian groups with all arrows reversed. This allows for a virtually complete algebraisation of any question concerning compact abelian groups. The subclass of compact abelian groups is not so special within the category of compact. groups as it may seem at first glance. As is very well known, the local geometric structure of a compact group may be extremely complicated, but all local complication happens to be "abelian." Indeed, via the duality theory, the complication in compact connected groups is faithfully reflected in the theory of torsion free discrete abelian groups whose notorious complexity has resisted all efforts of complete classification in ranks greater than two."

In recent years, major social forces such as: ageing populations, social trends, migration patterns, and the globalization of economies, have reshaped social welfare policies and practices across the globe. Multinational corporations, NGOs, and other international organizations have begun to influence social policy at a national and local level. Among the many ramifications of these changes is that globalizing influences may hinder the ability of individual nation-states to effect policies that are beneficial to them on a local level. With contributions from thirteen countries worldwide, this collected work represents the first major comparative analysis on the effect of globalization on the international welfare state.

The Welfare State in Post-Industrial Society is divided into two major sections: the first draws from a number of leading social welfare researchers from diverse countries who point to the nation-state as case studies; highlighting how it goes about establishing and revising social welfare provisions. The second portion of the volume then moves to a more global perspective in its analysis and questioning of the impact of globalisation on citizenship, ageing and marketization.

With its integrative analyses of policy and practice in countries struggling to provide social welfare support for their needy populations, The Welfare State in Post-Industrial Society will become an important voice in the debate on social welfare.

It is a great pleasure and honor to be asked to participate in the translation of this important and historical volume on thoracic surgery and to provide this foreword. Martin Kirschner of Mannheim/Heidelberg was an early pioneer in thoracic and esophageal surgery. His operation for bypass of the esophagus using the entire stomach remains a standard of the surgical armamentarium to this date. The original Kirschner Textbook of Surgery was a standard in its day. We are fortunate that Professors H. Pichlmaier and F.W. Schildberg and other colleagues have provided us with this important modern successor of a classic textbook. The reader is rewarded by an extensive treatise which includes not only the most up to date techniques in pulmonary, esophageal, mediastinal, and chest wall (including breast) surgery but also provides an excellent perspective on the techniques used by pioneers in the field. Although some of these early techniques are not commonly used today, knowledge of their use and application broadens the capability of the thoracic surgeon. Changing times bring renewed problems with infectious diseases. Knowledge of the management of the pleural space and pulmonary infectious problems is a critical part of the education of the thoracic surgeon.

Leibniz in Paris 1672-1676 - His Growth to Mathematical Maturity (Paperback): Joseph H. Hofmann Leibniz in Paris 1672-1676 - His Growth to Mathematical Maturity (Paperback)
Joseph H. Hofmann
R1,600 Discovery Miles 16 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz first arrived in Paris in 1672 he was a well-educated, sophisticated young diplomat who had yet to show any real sign of his latent mathematical abilities. Over his next four crowded, formative years, which Professor Hofmann analyses in detail, he grew to be one of the outstanding mathematicians of the age and to found the modern differential calculus. In Paris, Leibniz rapidly absorbed the advanced exact science of the day. During a short visit to London in 1673 he made a fruitful contact with Henry Oldenburg, the secretary of the Royal Society, who provided him with a wide miscellany of information regarding current British scientific activities. Returning to Paris, Leibniz achieved his own first creative discoveries, developing a method of integral transmutation' through which lie derived the 'arithmetical' quadrature of the circle by an infinite series. He also explored the theory of algebraic equations. Later, by codifying existing tangent and quadrature methods and expressing their algorithmic structure in a universal' notation, lie laid the foundation of formal 'Leibnizian' calculus.

Karl H. Hofmann, Michael W. Mislove
R1,364 Discovery Miles 13 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume contains survey papers by the invited speakers at the Conference on Semigroup Theory and Its Applications which took place at Tulane University in April, 1994. The authors represent the leading areas of research in semigroup theory and its applications, both to other areas of mathematics and to areas outside mathematics. Included are papers by Gordon Preston surveying Clifford's work on Clifford semigroups and by John Rhodes tracing the influence of Clifford's work on current semigroup theory. Notable among the areas of application are the paper by Jean-Eric Pin on applications of other areas of mathematics to semigroup theory and the paper by the editors on an application of semigroup theory to theoretical computer science and mathematical logic. All workers in semigroup theory should find this volume invaluable.
