Am 30. Januar 1978 vollendete Herr Professor Dr. Dr. Siegfried Koller sein 70. Lebensjahr. Aus diesem AnlaE fand am 31. Januar 1978 im Rats- saal des I*1ainzer Rathauses ein Symposium statt. Der vorliegende Band gibt die bei diesem Symposium gehaltenen Vortrage wieder sowie die Ab- schiedsvorlesung von S. Koller und die Antrittsvorlesung von J. Micha- elis. 1m Januar 1963 begann Herr Professor Koller mit dem Aufbau des Mainzer Instituts flir Hedizinische Statistik und Dokumentation und faEte damit erstmals verschiedene Forschungsrichtungen zu einem Fachgebiet zusam- men, flir das es auch im Ausland kein Vorbild gab. Das neue Fachgebiet entwickelte sich so dynamisch, daE bereits innerhalb weniger Jahre ver- gleichbare Institute an nahezu allen Hochschulen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland entstanden. Der Rahmen eines eintagigen Symposiums erfoderte eine Beschrankung auf nur wenige Aspekte der Medizinischen Statistik und Dokumentation, die jedoch als Beispiele flir die Vielfalt der einzelnen Bereiche und der Verknlipfungen des Fachgebietes stehen. Ein Teil der Beitrage ver- anschaulicht, daE das Fachgebiet wichtige Aufgaben im Bereich der medi- zinischen Forschung und des Gesundheitswesens erflillt, andere Referate zeigen die engen Verflechtungen mit mehr theoretischen Fachern, wie der mathematischen Statistik und der Informatik. Die rasche Entwicklung der verschiedenen Teile des Fachgebietes wird in den einzelnen Artikeln ebenso deutlich wie die Tatsache, daE Herr Professor Koller in vie len Bereichen wesentliche Entwicklungen bewirkt oder angeregt hat.
