T. auch auBereuropaischen Landern seit Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts einheitlich angewendet. Nach Uberlieferungen spielte die Massage bereits im Altertum eine wichtige Rolle. Sie war bei den Chinesen, Japanern, Indern, Griechen und Romern bekannt. Erwahnt seien HIPPO- KRATES (460-377 V. u. Z.) und ASKLEPIADES (128-56 V. u. Z.), die die Massage als wichtiges Heilmittel ansahen. Neben der Massage kannte man im Alter- tum Behandlungsmethoden, die an heutige Reflexzonentherapien erinnern, genannt sei die Akupunktur. Nach langer Zeit des Schweigens finden sich Niederschriften tiber Massage im Mittelalter in Arabien (908-1037 u. Z.). Sie wird dort als MaBnahme medizinischer Behandlung beschrieben. Obwohl diese Erkenntnisse durch die Kreuzfahrer auch nach Europa kamen, wurden sie unter starkem, negativem, klerikalem EinfluB vernachlassigt. Die Inquisition verfolgte aIle diejenigen, denen solche "Heilktinste" nach- gesagt wurden und verurteilte sie zum Tod durch Verbrennen auf dem Scheiterha ufen.
