In recent years the Standard Model of electroweak interactions has successfully passed a number of crucial tests, most notably in neutral current reactions and through the observation of W- and Z-bosons in proton-antiproton collisions. How ever, experiments are only beginning to verify one of the most basic consequences of its theoretical formulation as a local quantum field theory: quantum corrections as calculated in perturbation theory. Measurements that will be carried out at electron positron colliders at Stanford and CERN in the very near future will improve the accuracy by more than an order of magnitude. Thus either these crucial elements of the present theoretical framework will be confirmed or the road to physics beyond the Standard Model will be opened. A huge amount of theoretical work has been invested during the past few years to match the envisaged experimental precision. QED corrections, in particular from initial state radiation, will playa dominant role in the interpretation of measurements and have to be understood at a hitherto unrivalled level of accuracy. Analytical cal culations - either to a fixed order in a or by summing large logarithms to arbitrary order - are complementary to recent developments of Monte Carlo techniques in the simulation of events with multiple photon emission. Measurements with hadronic final states evidently require the understanding of hadronic corrections to high accu racy. Even purely leptonic reactions are influenced by hadronic interactions through vacuum polarization.

Als Bitterstoffe bezeichnet man bitter schmeckende, N- und S-freie, O-haltige Substanzen, die noch nicht in andere groBe Verbindungsklassen, wie Alkaloide, Farbstoffe, Sterine usw. , eingegliedert sind. Bis heute ist es nicht gelungen, eine Beziehung zwischen dem bitteren Geschmack und der chemischen Konstitution zu entdecken (75). Wenn auch viele Bitterstoffe Keton- oder Lactongruppierungen enthalten, so ist doch das Vorhandensein derartiger Gruppen zur Erregung der auf "bitter" ansprechenden Geschmackssinnes-zellen keine notwendige V oraussetzung. Das Vorkommen der Bitterstoffe ist nicht auf bestimmte Pflanzen- familien beschrankt, wenn sie auch in einigen besonders zahlreich ver- treten sind, wie z. B. in den Gentianaceen oder den Compositen. Ent- stehung oder eventuelle Aufgabe der Bitterstoffe in den Pflanzen sind vollig unbekannt. Lediglich bei den Gentianaceen sind bisher Versuche zur Lokalisierung des Bildungsortes durch 1. KORTE (9I) unternommen worden. Hier konnte sowohl durch Pfropfungsversuche wie auch durch Wurzelkulturen gezeigt werden, daB weder SproB noch Wurzel allein fur die Bitterstoffbildung verantwortlich ist. 1m allgemeinen sind die Bitterstoffe in allen Organen der Pflanzen zu finden (I37); bei den stets bitteren Gentianaceen sind die Samen bitterstoff-frei. 1m Verlauf der Vegetationsperiode kann es zu Schwankungen im Bitterstoffgehalt kommen, hieruber liegen aber ebenfalls nur wenige Untersuchungen vor (IOI). Es hat ferner in manchen Fallen den Anschein, als stiege mit zunehmendem Alter einer Pflanze auch die Bitterkeit an (75). Die Existenz der Bitterstoffe ist schon seit langer Zeit bekannt, bereits im 15. J a~rhundert werden sie in deutschen Krauterbuchern beschrieben (IIO).

Russian officials claim today that the USSR never possessed an offensive biological weapons program. In fact, the Soviet government spent billions of rubles and hard currency to fund a hugely expensive weapons program that added nothing to the country's security. This history is the first attempt to understand the broad scope of the USSR's offensive biological weapons research-its inception in the 1920s, its growth between 1970 and 1990, and its possible remnants in present-day Russia. We learn that the U.S. and U.K. governments never obtained clear evidence of the program's closure from 1990 to the present day, raising the critical question whether the means for waging biological warfare could be resurrected in Russia in the future. Based on interviews with important Soviet scientists and managers, papers from the Soviet Central Committee, and U.S. and U.K. declassified documents, this book peels back layers of lies, to reveal how and why Soviet leaders decided to develop biological weapons, the scientific resources they dedicated to this task, and the multitude of research institutes that applied themselves to its fulfillment. We learn that Biopreparat, an ostensibly civilian organization, was established to manage a top secret program, code-named Ferment, whose objective was to apply genetic engineering to develop strains of pathogenic agents that had never existed in nature. Leitenberg and Zilinskas consider the performance of the U.S. intelligence community in discovering and assessing these activities, and they examine in detail the crucial years 1985 to 1992, when Mikhail Gorbachev's attempts to put an end to the program were thwarted as they were under Yeltsin.

Betarezeptorenblocker sind zum festen Bestandteil der medika- mentosen Moglichkeiten bei der Therapie zahlreicher Erkran- kungen geworden. Grundlegende Untersuchungen und thera- peutische Studien wurden vorzugsweise anfangs mit Propranolol durchgefiihrt. Ausgehend von diesem Pharmakon sind zahlreiche chemische Modifikationen erzeugt worden. Sie sind gemeinsam gekennzeichnet durch eine Betarezeptoren-blockierende Wir- kung, unterscheiden sich aber durch zahlreiche Eigenschaften, die in therapeutischer Hinsicht zum Teil nicht unwesentlich sind: Affinitat zum Rezeptor, Kardioselektivitat, intrinsiche Aktivitat, Pharmakokinetik, Metabolisierung, Elimination, Kumulation bei Niereninsuffizienz, Wirkdauer u. a. Obwohl die zahlreichen kommerziell verfiigbaren Betarezep- torenblocker (etwa 20) hinsichtlich der Auswahl beim einzelnen Patienten gelegentlich differentialtherapeutische Erwagungen ratsam erscheinen lassen, gilt dennoch die allgemeine Regel, daB der praktizierende Arzt mit einer oder zwei dieser Substanzen auskommt, nachdem er auch eigene Erfahrungen hinsichtlich der Anwendung erworben hat. Das Schrifttum iiber Betarezeptorenblocker ist in den letzten Jahren in vielfaltiger Weise angewachsen. So liegt insbesondere in zahlreichen Tagungsberichten eine Fiille von Detailinforma- tionen vor. Fiir die therapeutische Praxis bedarf es aber einer sorgfaltigen Sichtung des Bekannten mit einem besonders engen Bezug zu der Krankheit, die eine Indikation zur Behandlung darstellt. Es wurde deshalb der Versuch untemommen, geordnet nach Krankheiten die Therapie mit Betarezeptorenblockem dar- zustellen. Dabei wurde in dem vorliegenden Buch besonderer Wert auf eine Auswahl des Wissensstoffes nach praktisch-thera- peutischen Gesichtspunkten gelegt.

Es folgen, von KUHN/LoOGEN/BREITHARDT/SEIPEL und KRELHAUS bearbeitet, die Kardiomyopathien. SchlieBlich werden noch die Myokarditis und Perikarditis von GILL- MANN und JUNGBLUT besprochen. Auf den genannten Gebieten sind in den letzten 10 Jahren so viele neue, auch fiir die Rontgendiagnostik wichtige Erkenntnisse gewonnen worden, daB das verhiUtnismaBig spate Erscheinen dieses Teilbandes des Handbuches del' Medizinischen Radiologie lmines- wegs zu bedauern ist. Im vorliegenden Band wird die vielschichtige klinische Problematik von Herzmuskel- und Perikarderkrankungen sowie der Herz- und Perikardtumoren ausfuhrlich dargestellt.
