This multi-disciplinary book conceptualizes, maps, and analyses ongoing standardization processes of risk issues across various sectors, processes, and practices. Standards are not only technical specifications and guidelines to support efficient risk governance, but also contain social, political, economic, and organizational aspects. This book presents a variety of standardization processes and applications of standards that may influence our judgements of risk, the organizing of risk governance, and, accordingly, our behaviour. Das vorliegende Buch, dessen ursprunglicher Haupttitel "Erzeugung sehr tiefer Temperaturen" in "Tieftemperaturtechnik" umgeandert worden ist, behandelt nach wie vor im wesentlichen den Temperaturbereich zwischen -100 DegreesC und dem absoluten Nullpunkt von -273,15 oe. Es stellt die physikalischen Grundlagen der Tieftem peraturtechnik, die Funktionsweise und die praktische Gestaltung und der Tieftem peraturanlagen sowie die vielseitigen technischen Anwendungen dar. Die I. Auflage, die 1957 als Band VIII des von Rudolf Plank herausgegebenen Handbuchs der Kalte technik erschienen ist, war im Jahre 1967 fruher als alle anderen Bande dieses Hand buchs vergriffen. Der weiter bestehenden Nachfrage und dem eigenen Wunsch ent sprechend, hoffte der erste der bei den Verfasser, bald eine neue Auflage bearbeiten zu koennen. Aber zahlreiche andere Verpflichtungen hielten ihn hiervon ab. Fur die erste Auflage standen ihm die Erkenntnisse und Erfahrungen zur Ver fugung, die er sich bei seiner 28jahrigen Tatigkeit bei der Linde AG in Hoellriegels kreuth bei Munchen erworben hatte. Von 1950 an hingegen konnte er die Weiter entwicklung der Tieftemperaturtechnik nur noch am Rande verfolgen. Ausserdem hatten bei seinem nunmehr bis zu 89 Jahren fortgeschrittenen Alter die Krafte nicht mehr ausgereicht, ein solches Buch allein zu bearbeiten. Einer Bitte des ersten Ver fassers folgend, hat Hermann Linde, Enkel von Carl von Linde, sich bereit erklart, bei der Bearbeitung der neuen Auflage mitzuwirken. Er war von 1949 bis 1976 bei der Linde AG tatig, dabei langere Zeit als das fur die Tieftemperatur-und Verfahrens technik zustandige V orstandsmi tglied.
