Condensed Matter Physics: A Very Short Introduction (Paperback): Ross H. McKenzie Condensed Matter Physics: A Very Short Introduction (Paperback)

There are many more states of matter than just solid, liquid, and gas. Examples include liquid crystal, magnet, glass, and superconductor. New states are continually, and unexpectedly, being discovered. Some states, such as superconductor, can act like Schrödinger's cat and exhibit the weirdness normally associated with the quantum theory of atoms, photons, and electrons. Condensed matter physics seeks to understand how states of matter and their distinct physical properties emerge from the atoms of which a material is composed. A system of many interacting parts can have properties that the parts do not have. Water is wet, but a single water molecule is not. Your brain is conscious, but a single neuron is not. Such emergent phenomena are central to condensed matter physics and also occur in many fields, from biology to computer science to sociology, leading to rich intellectual connections. When do quantitative differences become qualitative differences? Can simple models describe rich and complex behaviour? What is the relationship between the particular and the universal? How is the abstract related to the concrete? Condensed matter physics is all about these big questions. The materials in silicon chips, liquid crystal displays, and magnetic computer memories, may have transformed society, but understanding them has transformed how we think about complex systems. The purpose of this book is to provide an update both on the present management of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and on clinical and experimental research being done to control this disease. The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the current management of PVR. The Retina Society Classification of PVR is based in part on a gradation of severity from minimal to massive; therefore, this book attempts to correlate the management of PVR with its severity. The treatment of PVR of varying degrees of severity, from mild to the most severe form, is described by those authors with extensive experience with this spectrum of cases. Much progress has been made in the management of severe PVR as a result of vitreous injections, vitrectomy, periretinal membrane surgery, and retinal surgery. Authors in this book show that in mild and moderately severe PVR excellent results can be obtained with techniques that are less invasive and possibly less likely to stimulate further abnormal cellular proliferation. The new modalities for treatment of PVR are discussed by authors having extensive experience with them. The current status of pharmacological treatment and new concepts of the pathobiology of PVR are discussed. The second part of the book deals with questions frequently encountered in the management of PVR. These questions are answered by a panel of experts including Gary W. Abrams, Steven T. Charles, William H. Havener, Robert Machemer, Charles L. Schepens, and Walter H. Stern.

Retinopathy of Prematurity - A Clinician's Guide (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1992): John T. Flynn Retinopathy of Prematurity - A Clinician's Guide (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1992)
John T. Flynn; Foreword by H. Mackenzie Freeman; Edited by William Tasman
R2,921 Discovery Miles 29 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Retinopathy of Prematurity presents a review of the current knowledge of this disease, which tragically renders many premature infants blind. First, the volume covers the natural history, classification and histopathology of ROP, followed by examination techniques, recommendations for follow-up and therapy and finally a panel discussion providing answers to frequent questions and areas of legal concern.

Female Soldiers in Sierra Leone - Sex, Security, and Post-Conflict Development (Paperback): Megan H. MacKenzie Female Soldiers in Sierra Leone - Sex, Security, and Post-Conflict Development (Paperback)
Megan H. MacKenzie
R880 Discovery Miles 8 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The eleven-year civil war in Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002 was incomprehensibly brutal-it is estimated that half of all female refugees were raped and many thousands were killed. While the publicity surrounding sexual violence helped to create a general picture of women and girls as victims of the conflict, there has been little effort to understand female soldiers' involvement in, and experience of, the conflict. Female Soldiers in Sierra Leone draws on interviews with 75 former female soldiers and over 20 local experts, providing a rare perspective on both the civil war and post-conflict development efforts in the country. Megan MacKenzie argues that post-conflict reconstruction is a highly gendered process, demonstrating that a clear recognition and understanding of the roles and experiences of female soldiers are central to both understanding the conflict and to crafting effective policy for the future.

R416 Discovery Miles 4 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

SUCCESS IS A SCIENCE Success is a science, but success does not always come from what we do. Success comes from how we see things, and how differently we act on what we see. When you see how others do certain things, or when you hear others say certain things, you should program yourself to act on what you see or hear so that life can deliver the results you desire rather than to settle for the undesirable results. Whether your focus is on career, professional relationship, marriage or family relationship, "Discover What Makes People Successful," gives you the skills you need to make sound, effective decision to the everyday situations that will enable you to enjoy the rewards and benefits. You don't want to go through life wearing a sign that reads: "This is the unsuccessful victim of success." The highest service in life is to excel. We were born in this world to excel in everything we do, otherwise, we were born in vain.
