Despite the current rhetoric of Western leaders, democracies are
great and frequent war-makers and interventionists. This fact
stands in a strange contrast to the liberal self-image of
democracies being particularly peaceful. Addressing this contrast,
the book turns the 'democratic peace' theme on its head: rather
than investigating the reasons for the supposed pacifism of
democracies, it looks for the causes of their militancy. In order
to solve this puzzle, the authors transcend the disciplinary
boundaries of International Relations and draw on political theory,
political philosophy and sociology.
The Logical Foundations of Social Theory describes Gert Mueller's
argument that physical, biological, social, moral, and cultural
reality form an asymmetrical hierarchy of founding and controlling
relationships that condition social reality rather than
mechanically determining it. This book analyzes social
stratification as labor, wealth and power, the moral order as
solidarity, ideology and morality, and culture systems as art,
science, and religion.

Over 150,000 troops landed on the five beaches of D-Day, with over
20,000 reported casualties across both sides. June 6, 1944 will be
a day forever remembered in history. The story of D-Day has been
told on countless occasions, and is an event that reverberates
through time as one of the most pivotal moments in our history.
"Everything We Have" tells the personal stories of the people
involved in Operation Overlord, in their own words. Using rare
documents, artifacts and first-hand accounts from The US National
WWII Museum's official archives, you can gain a rare insight into
the thoughts and feelings of those soldiers who landed on the
beaches of Normandy.
Author-approved bcc: Robust statistics and the design of
experiments are two of the fastest growing fields in contemporary
statistics. Up to now, there has been very little overlap between
these fields. In robust statistics, robust alternatives to the
nonrobust least squares estimator have been developed, while in
experimental design, designs for the efficient use of the least
square estimator have been developed. This volume is the first to
link these two areas by studying the influence of the design on the
efficiency and robustness of robust estimators and tests. It shows
that robust statistical procedures profit by an appropriate choice
of the design and that efficient designs for a robust statistical
analysis are more applicable. The classical approaches of
experimental design and robust statistics are introduced before the
areas are linked. Dr. Christine H. M ller teaches at the Department
of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Free University of
Berlin and is a member of the research project on "Efficient
Experiments in Industrial Production." From 1988-1991, she worked
as a biometrician at the Medical Department of the Free University
of Berlin.
