Founding Community - A Phenomenological-Ethical Inquiry (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): H.Peter Steeves Founding Community - A Phenomenological-Ethical Inquiry (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
H.Peter Steeves
R2,969 Discovery Miles 29 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Phenomenology, in its traditional encounters with ethics, has commonly aimed at a more descriptive rather than prescriptive goal. The direction of this project, however, is both phenomenological and prescriptive as I attempt to provide a phenomenological foundation for communitarian ethical theory. I argue, following Husserl, that the Ego and the Other arise together in sense and thus we are committed to community in a foundational way. I am always and fundamentally constituted as a member of a community - as a Self among Others - and, given this, there are certain ethical implications. Namely, there is a communal Good of which my good is but a perspective; indeed, it is a perspective on a Good which encompasses the whole of the living world and not just humanity. Consequently, we are foundationally imbedded in a deep community and a deep communitarian ethic.

Developing a United Nations Emergency Peace Service - Meeting Our Responsibilities to Prevent and Protect (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Developing a United Nations Emergency Peace Service - Meeting Our Responsibilities to Prevent and Protect (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
H. Peter Langille
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book makes the case for a standing UN Emergency Peace Service. With this one development - effectively a UN first responder for complex emergencies - the organization would finally have a rapid, reliable capacity to help fulfill its tougher assigned tasks. To date, the UNEPS initiative has encountered an unreceptive political, fiscal, and security environment. Yet overlapping crises are now inevitable as are profound shifts. This book presents an insightful review of the worrisome security challenges ahead and analysis of two recent high-level UN reports. It addresses the primary roles, core principles, and requirements of a UNEPS, as well as the arguments for and against such a dedicated UN service. Further, it reveals that the primary impediments and lessons learned also help demonstrate what may work and, equally important, what won't. With modest support, the book shows, the next steps are feasible, although it's important to recall that ideas, even good ideas, don't work unless we do.

Human Interaction and Emotional Awareness in Gestalt Therapy - Exploring the Phenomenology of Contacting and Feeling... Human Interaction and Emotional Awareness in Gestalt Therapy - Exploring the Phenomenology of Contacting and Feeling (Paperback)
H. Peter Dreitzel
R1,083 Discovery Miles 10 830 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In Human Interaction and Emotional Awareness in Gestalt Therapy H. Peter Dreitzel explores a model of the contacting processes between human beings and their environments and presents a phenomenological exploration of the emotions guiding such contacts. The book makes an important contribution to our understanding of the role of psychotherapy in the modern world, especially in the context of change and crisis. Dreitzel sets out a new perspective of how we interact with each other, how we frame our encounters and differentiate them from one another, how we give them meaning, and how they are related to our needs and wants. This is followed by a unique phenomenological exploration of the emotions guiding such contacts, the first time the world of human feelings has been explored in depth and systematically analysed in Gestalt thought. These innovative explorations are framed first by a discussion of the historical development of Western conventions regarding everyday behaviour, and secondly by an examination of perspectives on climate change. Dreitzel analyses the mental and emotional states of potential clients as they are affected by these global processes and the book also includes an epilogue which evaluates how to work with climate anxiety. Dreitzel's conception of social change, with Gestalt therapy at its core, is relevant to all aspects of humanistic psychology. It elevates empathy, emotional development and the prevention of suffering at all levels of society, filling important gaps in Gestalt therapy theory and expanding it into exciting new territory. Human Interaction and Emotional Awareness in Gestalt Therapy also contains an insightful foreword by Michael Vincent Miller, PhD, and will be essential reading for Gestalt therapists, other professionals with an interest in Gestalt approaches and readers interested in social interaction, climate change and the role of psychotherapy in a changing world.

Plato's Animals - Gadflies, Horses, Swans, and Other Philosophical Beasts (Hardcover, annotated edition): Jeremy Bell,... Plato's Animals - Gadflies, Horses, Swans, and Other Philosophical Beasts (Hardcover, annotated edition)
Jeremy Bell, Michael Naas; Contributions by Christopher Long, Claudia Baracchi, Sara Brill, …
R2,024 R1,791 Discovery Miles 17 910 Save R233 (12%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Plato's Animals examines the crucial role played by animal images, metaphors, allusions, and analogies in Plato's Dialogues. These fourteen lively essays demonstrate that the gadflies, snakes, stingrays, swans, dogs, horses, and other animals that populate Plato's work are not just rhetorical embellishments. Animals are central to Plato's understanding of the hierarchy between animals, humans, and gods and are crucial to his ideas about education, sexuality, politics, aesthetics, the afterlife, the nature of the soul, and philosophy itself. The volume includes a comprehensive annotated index to Plato's bestiary in both Greek and English.

Developing Semantic Web Services (Hardcover): Craig F. Smith, H.Peter Alesso Developing Semantic Web Services (Hardcover)
Craig F. Smith, H.Peter Alesso
R5,414 Discovery Miles 54 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Developing Semantic Web Services is "well-informed about work on WS [Web Services] and the SemWeb [Semantic Web], and in particular . . . understand[s] OWL-S . . . very well . . .. Also, the book . . . fill[s] a need that, to my knowledge, hasn't been met at all." ---David Martin, editor OWL-S Coalition The inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee, is also the originator of the next generation Web architecture, the Semantic Web. Currently, his World Wide Web consortium (W3C) team works to develop, extend, and standardize the Web's markup languages and tools. The objective of the Semantic Web Architecture is to provide a knowledge representation of linked data in order to allow machine processing on a global scale. The W3C has developed a new generation of open standard markup languages which are now poised to unleash the power, flexibility, and above all---logic---of the next generation Web, as well as open the door to the next generation of Web Services. There are many ways in which the two areas of Web Services and the Semantic Web could interact to lead to the further development of Semantic Web Services. Berners-Lee has suggested that both of these technologies would benefit from integration that would combine the Semantic Web's meaningful content with Web Services' business logic. Areas such as UDDI and WSDL are ideally suited to be implemented using Semantic Web technology. In addition, SOAP could use RDF payloads, remote RDF query and updates, and interact with Semantic Web business rules engines, thereby laying the foundation for Semantic Web Services. This book presents the complete Language Pyramid of Web markup languages, including Resource Description Framework (RDF), Web Ontology Language (OWL) and OWL-Services (OWL-S) along with examples and software demos. The source code for the "Semantic Web Author," an Integrated Development Environment for Semantic Markup Languages is available on CD-ROM with the book.

Tissue Characterization in MR Imaging - Clinical and Technical Approaches (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Tissue Characterization in MR Imaging - Clinical and Technical Approaches (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1990)
H.Peter Higer, Gernot Bielke
R2,893 Discovery Miles 28 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

H.P. HIGER 1 In the seventeenth century people dreamed about a machine to get rid of evil spirits and obsessions, which were thought to be the main source of mis fortune and disease. I am not going to question this approach, because in a way it sounds reasonable. They dreamed of a machine that would display im ages from the inner world of men which could be easily identified and named. Somehow these are the roots of MR imaging. Of course, we now view disease from a different point of view but our objectives remain the same, namely to make diseases visible and to try to characterize them in order to cure them. This was the reason for setting up a symposium on tissue characterization. About 300 years later the clinical introduction of MRI has great potential for making this dream come true, and I hope that this symposium has con stituted another step toward its realization. When Damadian published his article in 1971 about differences in T1 relaxation times between healthy and pathological tissues, this was a milestone in tissue characterization. His results initiated intensive research in to MR imaging and tissue parameters. Actually his encouraging discovery was not only the first but also the last for a long time in the field of MR tissue characterization.

Monoclonal Antibodies (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1992): R. Gieseler Monoclonal Antibodies (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1992)
R. Gieseler; Edited by Johann H. Peters; Foreword by G Koehler; Translated by P. Debbage; Edited by Horst Baumgarten
R2,935 Discovery Miles 29 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The present new version of this popular laboratory manual is at the same time the first one of this text in the English language - and this makes me even a little proud, as it reminds me of probably the first collection of monoclonal recipes in English, written by myself, which circulated for a couple of years in many laboratories. In the meantime many researchers have put enormous effort into improving methods for monoclonal antibody production. The proce dures have become more and more standardized and by this have more and more lost the character of magic secrets. Hinrich Peters and Horst Baumgarten, who had followed this good tradition already in the previous edition, written in German, suc ceeded in making laboratory tricks teachable. They had contributed their own experiences in cell culture and immunology, and were able to engage a number of experienced authors to contribute to the work. They were all willing to follow the general concept of this book, which contains a brief theoretical background for the methods described and presents the procedures in a highly organized structure. So the book has retained its shape as a "cook-book," which I especially like."

Sleep Related Disorders and Internal Diseases (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987): Joerg H. Peter,... Sleep Related Disorders and Internal Diseases (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987)
Joerg H. Peter, Thomas Podszus, P. V. Wichert
R4,400 Discovery Miles 44 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The normal function of the organism in various stages of activity can be seen as a process of mutual interaction of different regulation mechanisms building up the behaviour of the organism in changing situations and/or ages and/or levels of health or disease. Insights into these very complex relations which steer the action of the organism are particularly important for the study of internal medi cine. They can be seen as directly related to the understanding of pathological conditions. Recently, the medical community has focused its interest on the physiology and pathophysiology of events which happen during sleep. Although some information on pathological regulation during sleep was collected in the 1930s, the modern technology of registration methods is required to analyse the pheno mena of sleep-related physiological and pathophysiological patterns. It is intere sting that the modern research in this field developed from neuropsychiatry and is now expanding into other fields of medicine, although some problems, for instance the Pickwickian syndrome, were also for a long time considered part of the field of internal medicine. It becomes clearer that sleep is not only a neuro psychiatric phenomenon, but also has profound consequences for other physio logical circuits, perhaps even an important role in pathogenesis. Sleep also has profound consequences for internal diseases. This was shown very clearly recently by many groups, although their data have not yet received the attention which they deserve."
