William Henry Rich Jones (1817 85) compiled and transcribed the documents relating to thirteenth-century Salisbury which are contained in this work. It complements his edition of the register of St Osmund (also reissued in this series) which relates to twelfth-century Salisbury. Following his untimely death, this work was completed and published in 1891 by his long-time acquaintance William Dunn Macray (1826 1916). The documents collected here include papal bulls, grants from sovereigns and bishops of Salisbury, foundation charters and items relating to church history. They are drawn from five Salisbury manuscripts and are presented in chronological order, more accurately than in previous publications, and with English side-notes to the Latin text. When first published, this collection was considered primarily of interest to local historians of Salisbury and Wiltshire. However, it also illustrates the pivotal role Salisbury played within the wider ecclesiastical, social and royal contexts of the thirteenth century.

Nach dem Ableben meines hochbetagten, verehrten Lehrers H. A. Gottron, im Jahre 1974 wurde mir vom Verlag die weitere Herausgabe dieses Bandes iiber- tragen, dessen Anlageplan seit Ende der 60er Jahre vorlag. Mein eigenes Zutun als (spat hinzutretender) Co-Editor war mithin von vornherein bescheiden und bestand in erster Linie in der Bemiihung, die Herausgabe des thematisch fUr das gesamte Erganzungswerk besonders wichtigen Bandes so rasch wie nur eben machbar zu befordern, ja iiberhaupt in greifbare Nahe zu mcken. So erwies sich denn auch bald in Ansehung der einerseits bereits abgeschlossenen und zum anderen der noch nicht fertiggestellten Beitrage eine Unterteilung in zwei Teilbande als zweckmiiBig, um auch diesem Handbuchband so viel wie moglich an erforderlicher wissenschaftlicher Aktualitat zu erhalten. Denn bei der heute in einer sog. Reform- zeit an den Universitaten in der Regel besonders starken tiiglichen Einspannung der meisten fUr eine solche Arbeit in Frage kommenden Autoren war es offenbar nicht zu vermeiden, daB groBe Verspatungen und zum Teil sogar Riicktritte vom zugesagten Vorhaben in Kauf genommen werden muBten. Um so mehr ist des- halb besonderer Dank an jene Mitarbeiter zu richten, die entweder zu relativ spiitem Zeitpunkt hilfreich als Autor neu in entstandene Liicken einsprangen oder zumindest der Bitte um zum Teil wiederholte Dberarbeitung ihres bereits gelie- ferten Beitrags immer wieder verstiindnisvoll entsprachen. So diirfte denn auch hier zu guter Letzt, der groBen Handbuchtradition des Verlages Springer ent- sprechend - in diesem FaIle kraftvoll vertreten durch Herrn H.
