The Look of Beauty (Paperback): Paul H. Simmons The Look of Beauty (Paperback)
Paul H. Simmons
R288 Discovery Miles 2 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Paul Hume Simmons was born in Ilford, Essex, in 1957 and attended Brentwood School and the University of Essex. He has worked as an administrator in local government for the last 26 years; has two daughters and two little grandchildren and lives near Colchester. This collection of poems The Look of Beauty follows on from his first publication in 2013, A Construction in Space. Its style can be concise and sometimes apparently simple and retains a certain rhythm. It touches and dwells on ideas and situations with insight and some delicacy - and the poet hopes to instil a sense of beauty and a degree of order, in whatever ways these can be recognised; not just in appearance.

Faunal Extinction in an Island Society - Pygmy Hippopotamus Hunters of Cyprus (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): G.A. Clarke Faunal Extinction in an Island Society - Pygmy Hippopotamus Hunters of Cyprus (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
G.A. Clarke; Alan H. Simmons
R4,328 Discovery Miles 43 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The multidisciplinary research program at Akrotiri Aetokremnos is important, in my op- ion, for three reasons: two empirical and one conceptual. Quite apart from the archaeology, work at the site is a major contribution to island biogeography, in that the Phanourios sample-certainly the best from Cyprus and probably the best anywhere in the world-has already provided, and will continue to provide, important ecological and behavioral data on these intriguing creatures. Dwarfed island faunas are important to our understanding of the complex factors that shape natural selection in ecologically closed environments over the evolutionary long term. At Aetokremnos, we seem to have the "end" of a long sequence of hippo evolution on the island. With comparative studies of other Cypriot hippo faunas, we should be able to pin down the interval of initial colonization by what were, pres- ably, normal-sized hippos, and-if the other sites can be dated-document the dwarfing process in considerable detail. Aetokremnos would still be a significant paleontological - cality, even in the absence of evidence of a human presence there. While reading the text of the monograph, a number of questions strictly related to the paleontology occurred to me. One was how to model the colonization process. There seems to be little question that the large mammals colonized the island by swimming to it (because, I gather, Cyprus has not been connected to the mainland for roughly 5-6 m- lion years).

Joseph Conrad (Hardcover, 2006 Ed.): Allan H. Simmons Joseph Conrad (Hardcover, 2006 Ed.)
Allan H. Simmons
R3,984 Discovery Miles 39 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Joseph Conrad is one of the great figures in the tradition of the novel. This clear and well-written study provides a critically-informed introduction to Conrad and his work, placing him in his political, social and literary context, and examining his relationship to Modernism, England and Empire. Organised thematically - broaching the leading themes of race, the sea and nationalism - Allan H. Simmons covers the range of Conrad's fiction, from the early Malay novels, through such key works as Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Nostromo, The Secret Agent and Under Western Eyes, to his later novels. First-time readers of Conrad are provided with in-depth contexts for appreciating a writer whose work is often challenging, while readers already familiar with Conrad's fiction will find new perspectives with which to view it. Approachable and authoritative, this introductory guide is essential for anyone with an interest in a master of twentieth-century fiction whose work variously altered the English and European literary landscape.

The Nigger of the 'Narcissus' - A Tale of the Sea (Hardcover): Joseph Conrad The Nigger of the 'Narcissus' - A Tale of the Sea (Hardcover)
Joseph Conrad; Edited by Allan H. Simmons
R3,444 Discovery Miles 34 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Charting a homeward-bound voyage from Bombay to London aboard a sailing ship, The Nigger of the 'Narcissus' (1897) captured the late-Victorian era's maritime obsession and identified the strikingly original talent of Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) as a sea writer in what has proved to be a landmark of sea literature. The Introduction situates the novel in Conrad's career and traces its origins and reception. Explanatory notes illuminate literary and historical references, identify real-life places and indicate Conrad's sources and influences. The essay on the text and the apparatus lay out the history of the work's composition and publication, and detail interventions by Conrad's typists, compositors and editors. Also included are notes explaining literary and historical references, a glossary of nautical terms, illustrations, including maps and pictures of early drafts, and appendixes. This edition of The Nigger of the 'Narcissus' presents the novel and its preface in forms more authoritative than any so far printed, and restores a text that has circulated in defective forms since its original publication.

Optical Materials (Paperback, 2nd edition): Kelly S. Potter, Joseph H Simmons Optical Materials (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Kelly S. Potter, Joseph H Simmons
R3,952 Discovery Miles 39 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Optical Materials, Second Edition, presents, in a unified form, the underlying physical and structural processes that determine the optical behavior of materials. It does this by combining elements from physics, optics, and materials science in a seamless manner, and introducing quantum mechanics when needed. The book groups the characteristics of optical materials into classes with similar behavior. In treating each type of material, the text pays particular attention to atomic composition and chemical makeup, electronic states and band structure, and physical microstructure so that the reader will gain insight into the kinds of materials engineering and processing conditions that are required to produce a material exhibiting a desired optical property. The physical principles are presented on many levels, including a physical explanation, followed by formal mathematical support and examples and methods of measurement. The reader may overlook the equations with no loss of comprehension, or may use the text to find appropriate equations for calculations of optical properties.

Tales of Unrest (Hardcover): Joseph Conrad Tales of Unrest (Hardcover)
Joseph Conrad; Edited by Allan H. Simmons, J.H. Stape
R3,444 Discovery Miles 34 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The five stories brought together in Tales of Unrest (1898) mark a turning point in the writer's career. Conrad's first short story collection evidences a writer firmly in control of his new craft staking a claim to diverse cultural and fictional territories. The introduction situates the writing of these stories in Conrad's career and discusses their sources and contemporary reception. The explanatory notes identify literary and historical references and real-life places, and indicate influences. Two maps and six illustrations enrich the explanatory matter. The essay on the text lays out the history of the work's composition and publication, details interventions by Conrad's typists, compositors and editors, and explains editorial policy. This edition, established through modern textual scholarship, presents Conrad's stories and his preface to the collection in forms more authoritative than any so far printed.

Stone Age Sailors - Paleolithic Seafaring in the Mediterranean (Paperback): Alan H. Simmons Stone Age Sailors - Paleolithic Seafaring in the Mediterranean (Paperback)
Alan H. Simmons
R1,414 Discovery Miles 14 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past decade, evidence has been mounting that our ancestors developed skills to sail across large bodies of water early in prehistory. In this fascinating volume, Alan Simmons summarizes and synthesizes the evidence for prehistoric seafaring and island habitation worldwide, then focuses on the Mediterranean. Recent work in Melos, Crete, and elsewhere-- as well as Simmons' own work in Cyprus-- demonstrate that long-distance sailing is a common Paleolithic phenomenon. His comprehensive presentation of the key evidence and findings will be of interest to both those interested in prehistory and those interested in ancient seafaring.

Dale H. Simmons
R3,961 Discovery Miles 39 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Essek William Kenyon (1867-1948) has virtually escaped scholarly notice, and yet his influence on the twentieth-century church is profound. Of particular note is Kenyon's influence on William Durham that apparently led to the first major split in Pentecostalism. Kenyon's own evangelistic work was thoroughly interdenominational, touching every major Protestant denomination of his day. E.W. Kenyon and the Postbellum Pursuit of Peace, Power, and Plenty is the most comprehensive biography of Kenyon available today. It explores his influence on the Pentecostal/Charismatic movements, and likewise illuminates the practice of intuition and mysticism from which the 20th century message of peace, power and plenty emerged. Contains nine black and white photographs, bibliography and index.

Joseph Conrad: Contemporary Reviews (Hardcover): John G. Peters, Allan H. Simmons Joseph Conrad: Contemporary Reviews (Hardcover)
John G. Peters, Allan H. Simmons
R3,603 Discovery Miles 36 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Joseph Conrad: Contemporary Reviews (five volumes) is an indispensable resource for Conrad specialists and students of literary Modernism generally, aiming to provide as complete a view as possible of the contemporary reception of Joseph Conrad's works in the English-speaking world. These volumes offer insights into early twentieth-century reviewing practices, the marketing of literary fiction and the wide interest in such writing, as reviews of Conrad's work regularly appeared in provincial and colonial newspapers. Contemporary Reviews Volume 5 offers previously unavailable reviews spanning Conrad's career, from Almayer's Folly (1895) to Last Essays (1926). The nearly one thousand reviews collected here chart the consolidation of Conrad's reputation as a major English author, recording his impact upon late-Victorian literature and demonstrating how he helped shape literary Modernism. Articulating areas of critical interest that continue to attract readers and commentators today, the Contemporary Reviews confirm Conrad's growing stature in the colonial literary marketplace.

The two notions of proofs and calculations are intimately related. Proofs can involve calculations, and the algorithm underlying a calculation should be proved correct. This volume explores this key relationship and introduces simple type theory. Starting from the familiar propositional calculus, the author develops the central idea of an applied lambda-calculus. This is illustrated by an account of Gödel's T, a system that codifies number-theoretic function hierarchies. Each of the book's 52 sections ends with a set of exercises, some 200 in total. An appendix contains complete solutions of these exercises.

Joseph Conrad in Context (Hardcover): Allan H. Simmons Joseph Conrad in Context (Hardcover)
Allan H. Simmons
R2,857 Discovery Miles 28 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Joseph Conrad's Polish background, his extensive travels and his detached view of his adopted country, Britain, gave him a perspective unique among English writers of the twentieth century. Combining Continental and British influences, Victorian and Modernist styles, he was an artist acutely responsive to his age, whose works reflect and chronicle its shaping forces. This volume examines the biographical, historical, cultural and political contexts that fashioned his works. Written by a specialist, each short chapter covers a specific theme in relation to Conrad's life and work: letters, Modernism, the sea, the Polish and French languages, the First World War, and many other topics. This book will appeal to scholars as well as to those beginning their study of this extraordinary writer. It shows how this combination of different contexts allowed Conrad to become a key transitional figure in the early emergence of British literary modernism.

Heart of Darkness (Hardcover): Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness (Hardcover)
Joseph Conrad; Edited by Owen Knowles, Allan H. Simmons
R2,322 Discovery Miles 23 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

'I asked myself what I was doing there, with a sensation of panic in my heart as though I had blundered into a place of cruel and absurd mysteries not fit for a human being to behold'. Charles Marlow's dark intuition here arrives at the culmination of his physical and psychological quest in search of the infamous ivory-trader Kurtz in Joseph Conrad's most famous short story, Heart of Darkness. Ambiguously drawn to the powerful 'voice' of this autocratic European who has become a self-proclaimed ruler in an African colony, Marlow is increasingly embroiled in Kurtz's life and death: he is finally forced into a radical questioning, not only of his own assumptions, but also of the civilized and imperial pretensions of Western Europe. Offering a freshly-researched text based on the writer's original documents, this edition presents a classic of early modernist fiction in a version that, for the first time, recovers Conrad's preferred wordings, punctuation and narrative structure.

The Shadow-Line - A Confession (Hardcover, Critical): Joseph Conrad The Shadow-Line - A Confession (Hardcover, Critical)
Joseph Conrad; Edited by J.H. Stape, Allan H. Simmons; Introduction by Owen Knowles
R3,301 Discovery Miles 33 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Joseph Conrad's short novel The Shadow-Line: A Confession (1917) is one of the key works of early twentieth-century fiction. This edition, established through modern textual scholarship, and published as part of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Joseph Conrad, presents Conrad's only major work written during the First World War and its 1920 preface in forms more authoritative than any so far printed. Correspondence reveals that the part- and chapter-divisions present in the historical editions lack authorial sanction, and this edition of The Shadow-Line offers a continuous text for the first time, restoring to the narrative a fluency and dramatic intensity not hitherto found in any printing. An Introduction and Explanatory Notes, as well as maps and illustrations, enrich this volume. The Appendices publish materials relevant to Conrad's maritime career and to the publishing of the American serial, and the Apparatus allows the reader to follow the creative process.

Allan H. Simmons, John G. Peters, J.H. Stape
R11,004 Discovery Miles 110 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An indispensable resource both to Conrad specialists and to students of literary Modernism, this four-volume collection seeks to provide as complete as possible a view of the contemporary reception of the writer's works in the English-speaking world. The reviews cover all of Conrad's writings from Almayer's Folly (1895) to the posthumously published Last Essays (1926). The volumes also take into their purview the collaborations with Ford Madox Ford. Found here are evaluations by journalists as well as by creative writers, the latter including H. G. Wells, Katherine Mansfield, Walter de la Mare and Virginia Woolf. The volumes offer insights into early twentieth-century reviewing practices, the marketing of 'literary' fiction and the wide interest in such writing, as reviews of Conrad's work regularly appeared in provincial and colonial newspapers.

A Set of Six (Hardcover): Joseph Conrad A Set of Six (Hardcover)
Joseph Conrad; Edited by Allan H. Simmons, Michael Foster; As told to Owen Knowles
R3,263 Discovery Miles 32 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A Set of Six (1908) is one of Conrad's most versatile and varied compositions, embracing diverse interests and settings, multiple tonal qualities and a medley of short-story forms (ranging from the novella in 'The Duel' to the anecdotal tale in 'The Informer'). The volume's wide-ranging introduction offers a careful evaluation of the origins and sources of the individual stories, while also measuring their early reception as a published collection. Explanatory notes clarify literary and historical references, identify real-life places and people, and indicate borrowings and Gallicisms. The lengthy textual essay and its accompanying apparatus lay out the history of composition and publication, detailing interventions made by Conrad's typists, compositors and editors. Also included are appendices, allowing the reader first-hand access to Conrad's source material; glossaries of nautical and foreign terms; and illustrations in the form of maps and reproductions of early drafts. By returning to (and respecting) Conrad's own early manuscript and typescript forms, this edition presents the collection and its preface in a form more authoritative than any so far printed.

The Neolithic Revolution in the Near East - Transforming the Human Landscape (Paperback): Alan H. Simmons The Neolithic Revolution in the Near East - Transforming the Human Landscape (Paperback)
Alan H. Simmons
R1,081 R785 Discovery Miles 7 850 Save R296 (27%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of humanity's most important milestones was the transition from hunting and gathering to food production and permanent village life. This Neolithic Revolution first occurred in the Near East, changing the way humans interacted with their environment and each other, setting the stage, ultimately, for the modern world.
Based on more than thirty years of fieldwork, this timely volume examines the Neolithic Revolution in the Levantine Near East and the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Alan H. Simmons explores recent research regarding the emergence of Neolithic populations, using both environmental and theoretical contexts, and incorporates specific case studies based on his own excavations. In clear and graceful prose, Simmons traces chronological and regional differences within this land of immense environmental contrasts--woodland, steppe, and desert. He argues that the Neolithic Revolution can be seen in a variety of economic, demographic, and social guises and that it lacked a single common stimulus.
Each chapter includes sections on history, terminology, geographic range, specific domesticated species, the composition of early villages and households, and the development of social, symbolic, and religious behavior. Most chapters include at least one case study and conclude with a concise summary. In addition, Simmons presents a unique chapter on the island of Cyprus, where intriguing new research challenges assumptions about the impact and extent of the Neolithic.
"The Neolithic Revolution in the Near East" conveys the diversity of our Neolithic ancestors, providing a better understanding of the period and the new social order that arose because of it. This insightful volume will be especially useful to Near Eastern scholars and to students of archaeology and the origins of agriculture.

Centennial Essays on Joseph Conrad's Chance (Paperback, Pp. ed.): Allan H. Simmons, Susan Jones Centennial Essays on Joseph Conrad's Chance (Paperback, Pp. ed.)
Allan H. Simmons, Susan Jones
R2,059 Discovery Miles 20 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

When Joseph Conrad's novel Chance appeared in serial form in the New York Herald in 1912 and in book form in 1914 it established the author's financial security for the first time. Following years of struggle to reach a wide audience for his fiction, Conrad benefitted from the American marketing of this novel for the women readers of romance. Aggressive advertising promoted the writer's new focus on a female protagonist and Conrad's division of the story's location between land and sea. The novel proved popular and lucrative. Yet in spite of its economic success, Chance remains one of Conrad's less well-known narratives. This fresh new collection of essays from both young and established scholars opens up a lively critical debate taking Chance beyond the status of best-selling romance. In a striking re-evaluation of the novel these writers examine Chance's innovative narrative strategies, its up-to-the-minute commentary on female politics, contemporary ethics, as well as its antecedents in classical debate and the significance of Conrad's last use of his seaman narrator Marlow.
