This brief work consists of a message delivered in the D. L. Moody
Memorial Church on a Lord's Day morning and the substance of two
Friday meetings when questions were submitted and then answered
from the platform. Careful editing might have eliminated everything
that looks like repetition. But inasmuch as it is by constant
re-affirmation that truth is lodged in the mind and heart, I have
not pruned the answers as much as I otherwise might have. Let me
say that my object was not controversy nor the besting of an
opponent, but rather the edification and enlightenment of the
people of God, so that the knowledge of the truth might deliver
from legality and give true liberty. H. A. IRONSIDE Chicago,

A Collection of Dr. H.A. Ironside's Poems and Hymn
As we open this book we are introduced to the divinely appointed
leader who is to guide the people into their inheritance. It is
very significant that the name "Joshua" is the same as the name
that our blessed Lord bore here on earth. Jesus is the anglicized
Greek form of Joshua. The word Joshua means "Jehovah the Saviour,"
and we may see in this Joshua of the Old Testament, a type of the
Jesus of the New Testament. Moses, the lawgiver, led the people to
the very border of the land but was not permitted to lead them into
it. Joshua took up where Moses left off. The Apostle Paul tells us
that the law was Israel's child leader till Christ, but when Christ
came they were no longer under the child leader. So we have in type
the dispensation of the law passing away and the new dispensation
of grace beginning. Of course, the people were actually under the
law during all the days of Joshua and the Old Testament, and during
the time of our Lord's earthly ministry. It was not until the
Lord's Resurrection that believers were delivered from the law.
Joshua typifies the risen One leading us on into the privileges of
the new creation.
A visit of three weeks to Bible Lands, while deeply interesting,
and yielding much that has made a lasting impression on heart and
mind, was all too short to make an attempt at another book on
Palestine and the Near East worth-while or really possible. But I
have found that the story of things seen and heard in those lands
has been received with interest, and I have reason to believe with
blessing, when used as a basis for gospel messages. These addresses
have been stenographically reported and are now sent forth, with
the prayer that God will use them in the winning of souls and the
confirming the faith of believers.
THE Apostle Peter tells us in the first chapter of his Second
Letter that we do well to take heed in our hearts to the sure word
of prophecy, which shines as a light in a dark place, while we are
waiting for the dawning of the day and looking for the rising of
the morning star. These words should be of special interest to the
people of GOD in such portentous times as those in which our lot is
cast. It is a great pity that in many evangelical churches the
study of prophecy is almost entirely ignored and sometimes even
frowned upon: and yet there is nothing more calculated to rouse
Christians to a sense of their responsibility to live for GOD and
give the Gospel to a lost world as the expectation of our Lord's
imminent return. In my own ministry, I have found untold blessing
followed the proclamation of the great truths that are linked with
this blessed hope. The pages that compose the present volume are
either articles that have appeared in various periodicals during
the past ten years or are stenographic reports of actual addresses
delivered. While there is no exact order of presentation, yet they
are all, in my judgment, intimately enough connected to form one
whole, and may thus be read in order, as an attempt to open up the
truth of the prophetic Word. I have in mind particularly those who
have not given much attention to these things or others who by
wrong teaching have had their faith shaken. All I ask of each
reader is that he read the messages with an open mind, and if at
times he does not find himself in agreement with what is presented,
that he search the Scriptures carefully to see whether these things
be so. If they are not in accord with the Word, I would have no one
receive them. But if convinced, as I am myself, that they do indeed
set forth the truth concerning the near future as revealed in the
inspired Writings, my hope is that under GOD they will prove to be
for the edification and sanctification of those who accept their
teaching. H. A. Ironside
"Who is the Giver?" You remember when addressing the poor woman at
the well, our Lord Jesus Christ said, "If thou knewest the gift of
God, and who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink; thou
wouldst have asked of Him, and He would have given thee living
water" (John 4. 10). God is the Giver. I wish we could get that
clearly in our minds. A great many people think of God as a
merchantman; they think that He has something to sell; that He is
going about offering His salvation to people if they are rich
enough to purchase it. Thank God, He is too rich to sell His
salvation. But if He were to put it up for sale; if He were to set
a price on it in any sense commensurate with its value, neither you
nor I could ever purchase it.
