This book reports on the current global status of mungbean and its
economic importance. Mungbean (Vigna radiata)-also called green
gram-is an important food and cash crop in the rice-based farming
systems of South and Southeast Asia, but is also grown in other
parts of the world. Its short duration, low input requirement and
high global demand make mungbean an ideal rotation crop for
smallholder farmers. The book describes mungbean collections
maintained by various organizations and their utilization,
especially with regard to adapting mungbean to new environments. It
provides an overview of the progress made in breeding for tolerance
to biotic and abiotic stresses; nutritional quality enhancement
including genomics approaches; and outlines future challenges for
mungbean cultivation. In addition, genomic approaches to evaluating
the evolutionary relationship between Vigna species and addressing
questions concerning domestication, adaptation and
genotype-phenotype relationships are also discussed

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is now an everyday occur rence in
most general hospitals. Over the last two decades this therapeutic
modality has been made so simple that it is no longer the province
of the specialized surgeon or physician. Indeed, as with the
management of chronic renal failure so now with short bowel
disease, home parenteral nutrition has become a reality, though
this still requires a specialist team dedicated to its management.
Furthermore, as more patients will become suitable for home TPN
treatment (either long term or short term) so better
rationalization of (a) cost, (b) delivery systems and (c) patient
training will be necessary. Lessons can be learnt from the somewhat
diverse development of regular dialysis treatment in the early
1960s compared with the situation today. Here is a golden
opportunity, with the UK National Registry, to rationalize on home
TPN costs and to make sure the treatment is simplified and
available to all those who may require this treatment. This book is
not designed to be an overall comprehensive review of parenteral
nutrition. It is meant to set out simple guidelines and the
requirements for effective TPN both in hospital and at home. It is
aimed at doctors in training, interested physicians and surgeons,
nurses, dietitians and pharmacists. The purpose is to stimulate
interest and aware ness, rather than to provide detailed
'small-print' information. For the person seeking greater
knowledge, there are several excellent monographs on the subject.
The stunning conclusion to the mind-bending series Shuos Jedao is
awake... ...and nothing is as he remembers. He's a teenager, a
cadet-a nobody-in the body of an old man; a general in command of
an elite force. And he's the most feared, and reviled, man in the
galaxy. Jedao carries orders from Hexarch Nirai Kujen to re-conquer
the fractured pieces of the hexarchate. But he has no memory of
ever being a soldier, let alone a general, and the Kel soldiers
under his command hate him for a massacre he can't remember
committing. Kujen's friendliness can't hide the fact that he's a
tyrant. And what's worse, Jedao and Kujen are being hunted-by an
enemy who knows more about Jedao than he does himself...
This volume contains papers and discussions of the Vlth
Dialyse-Arzte Workshop, which was held in Bernried at Lake
Starnberg near Munich the 5th and 6th of March 1980. Generous- ly
sponsored by Travenol, Munich, the Dialyse-Arzte meetings now have
a tradition spanning 16 years. According to the con- stitution of
these meetings, the topics of earlier years had to cover dialysis
and related fields. Thus the sponsor requested that this year also
one lecture - incorporated here as part - should deal with the
state of art of dialysis, thereby hopefully linking this Workshop
to the previous meetings. Dialysis techniques of the 1960s,
pioneered by many of attend- ing speakers and panelists (see List
of Contributors), have never come to a standstill. Indeed, vascular
access and extra- corporeal circulation have become routine for the
nephrologist and have made possible the introductimn of new
approaches, such as hemofiltration and hemoperfusion. Also today
new membrane technologies provide us with a potentially even more
effective therapeutic tool, namely plasma separation.

In the first book-length history of Puerto Rican civil rights in
New York City, Sonia Lee traces the rise and fall of an uneasy
coalition between Puerto Rican and African American activists from
the 1950s through the 1970s. Previous work has tended to see blacks
and Latinos as either naturally unified as ""people of color"" or
irreconcilably at odds as two competing minorities. Lee
demonstrates instead that Puerto Ricans and African Americans in
New York City shaped the complex and shifting meanings of ""Puerto
Rican-ness"" and ""blackness"" through political activism. African
American and Puerto Rican New Yorkers came to see themselves as
minorities joined in the civil rights struggle, the War on Poverty,
and the Black Power movement - until white backlash and internal
class divisions helped break the coalition, remaking
""Hispanicity"" as an ethnic identity that was mutually exclusive
from ""blackness."" Drawing on extensive archival research and oral
history interviews, Lee vividly portrays this crucial chapter in
postwar New York, revealing the permeability of boundaries between
African American and Puerto Rican communities.
