This Is A New Release Of The Original 1862 Edition.
1862. With an Introduction containing numerous specimens of
macronic poetry, punning mottoes, rhopalic, shaped, equivocal,
lyon, and echo verses, alliteration, acrostics, lipograms,
chronograms, logograms, palindromes, bouts and rimes. Anagrams have
for so long been held in little esteem that we shall not be
surprised that there are few who are aware that these literary
amusements once knew better days. There were times, when great
poets considered the making of Anagrams and Acrostics a pleasing
and elegant relaxation; and when some individuals were so expert in
their construction, they obtained the honorable designation of
Anagrammatists.

The following etymological guesses are not so good, but they are
worthy of registration. One boy described a blackguard as one who
has been a shoeblack, '' while another thought he was a man dressed
in black.'' Polite'' is said to be derived from Pole, '' owing to
the affability of the Polish race. Heathen'' means covered with
heath''; but this explanation is commonplace when compared with the
brilliant guess--Heathen, from Latin haethum, ' faith, and en, '
not.''
