This unique collection of letters portrays the life and times of
John of Salisbury, the devoted secretary of Archbishop Theobald,
the faithful friend and counsellor of Beckett, and one of the
greatest of medieval scholars. Volume II, published in 1979, is
available at $98.00
Two years ago, just before the Prague meeting of the International
Astronomical Union, Armin Deutsch made the bold suggestion that the
space spectroscopists hold a joint symposium with the ground-based
observers. At that time the rocket observa- tions of stellar
spectra seemed too meagre to make such a meeting worthwhile, but we
proceeded in the hope that there would be significant new results
available by 1969. IAU Commissions 29 and 44, on Stellar Spectra
and Observations from Outside the Terrestrial Atmosphere
respectively, agreed to sponsor the symposium so that the
organization was given to the Joint Working Group of these
commissions. Conse- quently, the Organizing Committee, which met
first in Prague, consisted of A. Deutsch, M. W. Feast, L. Houziaux,
V. G. Kurt, N. G. Roman, J. Sahade, A. B. Underhill, and R. Wilson,
with myself as Chairman. Later COSP AR was invited to join in spon-
soring the symposium and T. Chubb was added as their
representative. We were specially pleased when C. de Jager invited
us to the Netherlands and offered the services of the Utrecht
Observatory for the local organization. He suggested we hold the
meeting at the new Lunteren Conference Centre located in a wooded
area some 35 km east of Utrecht. The modern facilities of the
Centre and the hospi- tality of its staff contributed much to the
enjoyment of our four days there.

Edited with a facing-page translation from the Latin text by:
Butler, H. E.; Unknown function: Millor, W. J.
The autobiography of Gerald of Wales, translated from the Latin,
offers a compelling picture of medieval life. Gerald of Wales, the
son of a Norman Baron and the grandson of a Welsh Princess, is one
of the most gifted and entertaining of medieval writers. His
autobiography, translated from the Latin, presents the story of an
Archdeacon who, despite his passionate efforts, never became a
Bishop; it is the self-revelation of a man as able and courageous
as he was vain and eccentric, and as devout and serious as he was
flamboyant and humorous, a vivid picture of twelfth-century kings
and prelates, of politics and travel, full of strange adventures at
home and abroad, told with frankness and power, and without a
counterpart in the literature of his day. Moreover, the volume
presents a vivid picture of medieval life in general. The late H.
E. BUTLER was Professor of Latin at University College, London.

The facts in nature are the foundation out of which all
consciousness and knowledge grow. Science is the outgrowth of these
facts through careful investigation and study. Revelation is facts
derived from the inner consciousness, intuition, which is allied to
the cause world and is cognizant of the mind from which it
originated, or from messengers (angels) from God. Revelation united
with science gives a substantial foundation for philosophy and
theology, which are the proper outgrowth of SCIENCE AND REVELATION.
Philosophy is the mathematics of reason applied.

The most curious and in some respects the most remarkable work that
the Silver Age has bequeathed to us is a fragment of a novel, the
Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter, Its author is generally identified
with Titus Petronius, the friend and victim of Nero. Tacitus has
described him in a passage, remarkable even among Tacitean
portraits for its extraordinary brilliance. 'His days he passed in
sleep, his nights in the business and pleasures of life. Indolence
had raised him to fame, as energy raises others, and he was
reckoned not a debauchee and spendthrift, like most of those who
squander their substance, but a man of refined luxury.
The author promises those who peruse the thoughts hereinafter
given, and carefully follow all their suggestions, that after two
years of faithful adherence thereto, you will never be sick; you
will never be in need of money or friends; whatever you undertake
will be successful; your mental capacity will continually increase
as long as you live; your domestic relations will be very happy,
and your children will be superior to all others; and when you
leave this world, the people will cherish your memory, and be
thankful that you lived.
