The success of many biopharmaceuticals relies on the development of
stable formulations and/or delivery systems. Biotechnology and
Applied Biochemistry serves to facilitate the continued development
of these systems to fulfil their commercial potential. With an
international research concerning the expression, purification,
characterization and application of biological macromolecules in
therapeutics and diagnostics.
Drug discovery is a challenging field. It involves team work of
several experts including medicinal chemists, natural chemists,
pharmacologists, toxicologists, clinicians etc to generate a safe
and biologically active drug. In the drug discovery programme,
medicinal plants play a key role and are a source of novel
molecules. The knowledge of folk medicine and ethnopharmacological
studies of plants play a significant role in the development of
primary screening methods in drug discovery.Enzymes are the targets
for many drugs because of the simplicity of enzyme based assays. It
involves the interaction with substrate to form the product. The
inhibitor will also interact with the enzyme, hence decreasing the
rate of reaction. The enzyme inhibition assays have prompted us to
do a primary screening of the methanolic extracts of plants
commonly used in Pakistan. Therefore these studies were designed to
investigate if any a target drug is present in a plant and to which
extent it is there to inhibit a particular enzyme of therapeutic
importance.
Diarrhoea represent a major health problem in developing world. It
has been estimated that diarrhea claims about two million deaths
per year, ranking third among all causes of infectious disease
deaths worldwide. Most of these deaths occur in children under five
years of age.Eastern medicine is a group of diverse health care
systems. There are many Eastern medicines used to treat
diarrhea. The information presented here is based on published
research, a lot of which is based in developing countries where
diarrhea is a serious and common problem.Hence, this book will
provide its reader a better understanding about all the aspects of
diarrhea particularly its management under the principals of
Eastern medicines which are quite life saving and easily
understandable
Hyperuricemia is indicative of a high level of uric acid in the
blood (>7mg/dl for men, >6mg/dl for women). The hyperuricemia
may indicate an increased risk of gout.It is estimated that
approximately 15 of every 1,000 males between 35 and 45 years of
age have hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia afflicts an estimated 840 out
of 100,000 people. Hyperuricemia can also result in uric acid
nephrolithiasis and possible nephropathy if uric acid accumulates
in the renal interstitium and tubules. This book comprises of a
clinical study conducted for the management of Hyperuricemia in
Hamdard University Karachi, Pakistan.Hence it will provide its
reader a better understanding of risk factors, causes, clinical
features, diagnosis and treatment of Hyperuricemia and its relevant
complications with allopathic as well as with modern herbal
medicines.
Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is very high and well
documented in gastroenterological disorders like gastritis, gastric
carcinoma, peptic ulcer disease, non ulcer dyspepsia and
gastroesophageal reflux disease. More than 50% of the world's
population harbor Helicobacter pylori in their upper
gastrointestinal tract. It causes a chronic low-level inflammation
of the stomach lining and is strongly linked to the development of
duodenal and gastric ulcers and stomach cancer. This book will
provide the readers a better understanding about the H. pylori
related gastroenterological disorders and their proper management
with clinical comparative research oriented herbal medicines.
