The studies indicated that sympodial branches had strong positive
correlation with plant height, monopodial branches and number of
bolls per plant while it negatively correlated with number of seeds
per lock, number of seeds per boll and boll weight. Plant height
had strong positive association with bolls per plant. The number of
locks per boll had positive correlation with boll weight and number
of seeds per boll while it negatively correlated with tapering boll
shape. Number of seeds per boll correlated positively with boll
weight and lint percentage. Number of seeds per lock had strong
positive association with number of seeds per boll and boll weight.
Number of seeds per boll correlated positively with boll weight.
Lint percentage had no association with any of the traits studied.
Fibre length correlated positively with fibre strength while these
traits had no correlation with any plant morphological trait.
A field research was conducted under field situation at the
Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, to study the
combining ability effects for yield and its components in
sunflower. Fifteen accessions of sunflower were crossed in line x
tester fashion. Crosses along with their parents were grown in the
field. For this purpose 10 lines (G-16, G-68, G-146, G-55, G-82,
G-40, G-9, HBR-5, A-18 and G-57) and 5 testers (G-3, G-32, G-61,
G-50, and G-54) were crossed according to line x tester fashion.
Among the lines G-82, G-40, G-9 and HBR-5 showed positive and
significant GCA effects for No. of achene per head, 100 achene
weight, and achene yield per plant and proved to be good general
combiners for most of these characters. Among the testers G-3, G-61
and G-54 proved as good general combiners for most of the
characters i.e. for number of days to flowering, plant height,
internodal length, No. of achene per head and achene yield/ plant.
The hybrids G-146 x G-54, G-16 x G-61, and G-82 x G-3 showed good
specific combining effects are for all the characters. Genotypic
differences were significant for all the characters."
Investigations were done to find out the Agro-qualitative response
of forage maize (Zea mays L.), blended and intercropped with forage
legumes. The experiment consisted of 10 treatments containing
different combinations of maize with legumes i.e. sesbania and
cluster bean. This study was focused to achieve high quantity and
better quality of maize fodder.Aim of the study was to determine
the more efficient method of sowing and to have a look on the most
favorable combination of maize and legumes. The better sowing
method and combination of legumes with non-legume fodder can
provide the higher quantity and better quality of fodder to the
dairy industry of Pakistan.Data on growth, yield and quality
parameters was recorded by using standard procedures, statistically
analyzed using Fishers analysis of variance technique and least
significant difference (LSD) test at 5 % probability will be used
to compare the treatment's means.Keeping in view the results of the
present study, it was concluded that the good quantity and quality
of forage maize (Zea mays L.) sown mixed with forage legumes can be
obtained by interrow growing of maize and sesbania in 30 cm apart
rows under Sahiwal conditions
Complete diallel mating design of five parents NIAB KRISHMA, SLS-1,
MNH-513, BH-162 and LA.FREGOBRACTS-3159 were used in the crosses to
study the inheritance pattern and combining ability for various
plant traits such as plant height, number of monopodial branches,
number of sympodial branches, number of bolls per plant, seed
cotton yield, boll weight, GOT, fiber length, fiber strength and
fiber fineness in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). The data
collected were subjected to analysis of variance technique which
shows significant results of all characters. The characters showing
significant genotypic differences were further analyzed genetically
following the diallel analysis which show that the regression
co-efficient for all traits deviates significantly from zero but
not from unity which reveals that data of all traits is free from
epistasis. Varieties MNH-513 and NIAB Krishma show better results
according to yield components and fiber characters due to having
more dominant genes and better combining ability comparatively
other varieties.
