This book provides a rare integrative interpretation of government-enterprise relations in China, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Focusing on the government and its principal goals, it describes the transition of government-enterprise relations and highlights the embedding of the entities of government and enterprises in specific political, economic and social environments. Further, it analyzes how the government's institutional arrangement regulates the behavior of various types of enterprises with different structures, and the logic mechanisms such institutional arrangements use to change and shape government-enterprise relations. Based on these issues and logic mechanisms, the book points out the complexity of government-enterprise relations and the diversity of their transition path, thus reflecting some typical features in the overall reform of China and discussing specific factors related to China's social development experience.

Diese Arbeit ist im Rahmen eines Forschungsstipendiums der Alexander von Humboldt- Stiftung entstanden. Ihre Anfange reichen allerdings llingere Zeit zuriick. Sie basiert einerseits auf einer mehrjiihrigen empirischen Forschung, die ich mit meinen Kollegen Fang Ming, Wang Ying, Sun Bingyao und Wang Qi zusammen durchgefiihrt habe. Ande- rerseits wurde sie initiiert durch Prof. Dr. William J. Goode von der Harvard University, als er im Jahre 1986 unser Institut fur Soziologie der chinesischen Akademie der Sozialwissenschaften in Beijing besuchte und mit mir sehr hilfreich iiber das Konzept dieser Arbeit diskutierte. Die Grundgedanken wurden spater vertieft durch vielfiiltige Anregungen und Stellungnahmen von Prof. Dr. Lewis A Coser und Prof. Dr. Rose Coser von der Stony Brook University, Prof. Dr. Erik Olin Wright von der Wisconsin University, Prof. Dr. Michael Hout und Prof. Dr. Martin S. Jankowski von der Berkeley University sowie Prof. Dr. John Western von der Queensland University in Australien. Die kreativen Diskussionen mit ihnen haben die Konstruktion der Arbeit stark beeinfluBt. Auch wahrend meines Forschungsaufenthaltes in Deutschland ist mir vielseitge akademische Unterstiitzung zuteil geworden. Die fruchtbare Diskussion mit Prof. Dr. Niklas Luhmann, die intensive akademische Betreuung durch Prof. Dr. Peter Weingart und Dr. Wolfgang Krohn sowie die kreativen Gesprache mit Prof. Dr. Peter Atteslander und Dr. Bettina Gransow sind ebenfalls in die Untersuchung eingeflossen.
