In the major teaching hospitals, residents still tend to consider sialography as a panacea for the majority of their diagnostic problems, whereas the infor mation provided is actually rather restricted. Other modern methods such as CT and MRI have taken over the role of sialography to a certain extent. This also applies to ultrasonography and scintigraphy. Moreover, microbiol ogy, sialometry, sialochemistry, cytology, and histopathology may give super ior information in certain cases."

Die inhaltliche Basis fUr das hier vorliegende Buch bilden meine jetzt fast IOjiihrige Erfahrung in der Begleitung Krebskranker als psychosomatisch und psychoanalytisch tiitiger Arzt und eine em pirische Studie zur Atiologie, Prognose und Nachsorge des Mammakarzinoms. Zielsetzung war der Versuch, im Sinne einer ganzheitlichen Sichtweise in der Medizin schulmedizinisch-naturwissenschaft liche als auch psychosomatisch-psychoanalytische Erkenntnisse mit dem Laiensystem, d. h. der subjektiven Krankheits- und Ge sundheitstheorie des betroffenen Krebskranken in Verbindung zu bringen. Es find en gesamtgesellschaftliche Faktoren, insbesondere die Lei densunfahigkeit betreffend, somatische Grundvoraussetzungen von Krebserkrankungen, die Beziehung zwischen Personlichkeit und Krankheitsverarbeitung bzw. -verlauf und die Arzt-Patient Beziehung bei der Betreuung Krebskranker Beriicksichtigung. Die Ergebnisse der hier vorliegenden Studie, aber auch die ge sammelten Erfahrungen im Kontakt mit Krebskranken haben zu der Erkenntnis gefUhrt, daB nicht nur die Lebensqualitiit, son dem auch der Krankheitsverlauf, die Uberlebensdauer betref fend von Personlichkeitsfaktoren und der Art der Krankheitsver arbeitung abhiingig sein konnen. Hier liegen Ansiitze fUr eine ge zielte psychosoziale Nachsorge."
