Lightning represents a natural phenomenon of substantial interest. Due to its complex nature, research continues in many countries and reveals amazing results. Lightning is actively observed because of its relevance to Earth climate and air composition in addition to the classical aspects of related human fatalities and damage to forests, buildings, power lines, aircraft, structures and electronic devices. In this volume, the most important contemporary questions on lightning are addressed and analyzed under many experimental and theoretical aspects. Lightning detection techniques using ground-based and space-borne methods are described, along with network engineering and statistical analysis. Contributions detail research on atmospheric electricity, cloud physics, lightning physics, modeling of electrical storms and middle atmospheric events. Special phenomena such as triggered lightning and sprite observations are examined. Lightning-induced nitrogen oxides and their effects on atmospheric chemistry and climate are discussed. Each topic is presented by international experts in the field. Topics include: * air chemistry * convective storms * infrasound from lightning * lightning and climate change * lightning and precipitation * lightning and radiation * lightning and supercells * lightning and thunderstorms * lightning detection * lightning from space * lighting protection * lightning return strokes * observations and interpretations * spatial distribution and frequency * triggered lightning * weather extremes

"The Greek magical papyri" is a collection of magical spells and
formulas, hymns, and rituals from Greco-Roman Egypt, dating from
the second century B.C. to the fifth century A.D. Containing a
fresh translation of the Greek papyri, as well as Coptic and
Demotic texts, this new translation has been brought up to date and
is now the most comprehensive collection of this literature, and
the first ever in English.
English summary: The volume includes 12 scholarly essays written between 1995 and 2008, in English or German. As the title of the book indicates, the presentation is in two parts. The first part includes seven essays on the theology of Paul (concerning ritual and ethics of the Lord's Supper, anthropology, sacrifice, wisdom, self-deception and self-knowledge). The second part comprises five history-of-religion studies concerning the Hellenistic philosophers Dio of Prusa and Plutarch of Chaironeia (discussing religion and ethics, worship of the deity and cultic images, history and miracle, apotheosis and empty tombs). Methodically controlled comparisons show similar and different problems of interest on both sides, which deserve attention also in contemporary discussions. German description: Der 5.
"A diligent and carefully argued exercise in the historico-critical method, Hans Dieter Betz' Essays present the Sermon on the Mount (SM) as a pre-Matthean composition coming from a Jewish-Christian community engaged in the polemical process of constructing an identity vis-a-vis mainstream Jewish (Pharisaic) groups on the one hand and emerging Gentile Christianity on the other. It is this process that prompts the SM compiler(s) to rethink and rework the inherited Jesus tradition. Since the first appearance of the Essays in 1985 - the classic Hermeneia commentary on the SM by the author would be published in 1995 - they have remained essential reading for students of the New Testament and its Hellenistic and Jewish settings. Today, the exciting new ways of reading the Sermon suggested in Betz' seminal work continue to inform our search for a fuller and clearer grasp of the multi-faceted and dynamic world of nascent Christianity, as well as the ongoing quest for the historical Jesus." -Serge Ruzer Hebrew University of Jerusalem "The perspective that unifies these essays is the assertion that the Sermon on the Mount should be recognized and studied as an independent composition that was compiled prior to its incorporation into the Gospel of Matthew. . . . Betz argues that the Sermon on the Mount is an epitome, that is, a condensation of the teachings of Jesus, collected for the purpose of brevity and precision. Such a genre was useful, because it encouraged a follower or disciple to keep the teacher's entire system in mind." -Theology Today HANS DIETER BETZ is Professor Emeritus of New Testament at The Divinity School, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois. He is the author of the Hermeneia.
In this fifth lecture of the Julius Wellhausen series, Hans Dieter Betz draws upon the Epistle to the Philippians to examine contentious questions about Paul's situation in Rome before his death. His answers emerge from a literary and historical analysis of the Philippians, in which the Apostle declares his fundamental beliefs in response to an inquiry by the Philippians (1,12). The study offers an overview of research work related to Paul's Epistle to the Philippians.
