This book is the first independent exploration of the Federation
Internationale de l'Automobile's (FIA) institutional history.
Virtually unexamined compared with similar institutions like the
FIFA and the IOC, the FIA has nevertheless changed from being a
small association in 1904 to becoming one of the world's most
influential sport governing bodies. Through chronologically
organised chapters, this book explains how the FIA manages to link
together motorsport circuses like Formula 1 with the automotive
industry and societal issues like road safety and environmental
sustainability. In an exciting narrative spanning seven decades, it
reviews the FIA's organisational turning points, governing
controversies, political dramas and sporting tragedies. Considering
the FIA to be a unique type of hybrid organisation characterised by
what the author calls 'organisational emulsion', this case study
contains theoretical innovations relevant to other studies of sport
governing bodies. It makes an empirically grounded contribution to
the research fields of institutional logics, historical sociology
and sport governance.

This open access book provides novel insights on management
innovation and sustainability in motorsport. Utilizing the
all-electric racing championship called Formula E as case, it draws
upon data from multiple sources such as sustainability reports of
Formula and its stakeholders, media data, podcasts and newspaper
articles, partner publications, and social media outputs. It aims
to generate a theoretical model that describes and explains the
optimal conditions for innovation when it comes to enhancing a
sport organisation's commercial product. Apart from its general
transferability to sports research, this model enables further
study of a motorsport phenomenon that has been hailed by media as
the championship, which affirms money in sustainability. It has
also been emphasized by sport researchers as a highly relevant case
to study management innovation. This book will be interesting to
academics working in sports management, knowledge management,
innovation and sustainability. Hans Erik Naess (b. 1978) is an
Associate Professor in Sport Management at Kristiania University
College, Norway. He holds a PhD in sociology from the University of
Oslo and is the author of several peer-reviewed articles and books
on motorsports, including A History of Organizational Change: The
case of Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) 1945-2020.
Anne Tjonndal (b. 1988) is an Associate Professor in Sociology of
Sport at Nord University, Norway. She holds a PhD in sociology from
Nord University and has published articles in high-quality
international journals on topics like social innovation, gender and
inclusion/exclusion in sport. Tjonndal is the Celia Brackenridge
International Research Award winner for 2019.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, sanctions
were implemented that banned Russia from most international sports.
As a result, sport governing bodies (SGBs) have made a marked shift
in their tradition of neutrality, to a point of no return. In light
of this, this book asks what is next for SGBs. It provides an
analysis of the root problem that sport governing bodies have had
with politics since their inception: a paradoxical treatment of
neutrality. This can be evidenced by their awarding of Mega-Sport
Events to authoritarian states and also through the SGBs' own
desire to make a difference by promoting human rights and
sustainable development. Good or bad, the author argues that their
neutrality principles are invalidated by their actions. Offering
interdisciplinary research with empirical examples, this issue is
explored in an engaging, yet analytical way, making it valuable
reading for researchers and students interested in sport
management, for organisations and also policy makers. This book
presents a pioneering study of neutrality and autonomy in sport in
light of the Ukraine crisis, and addresses a growing appetite in
academia on how sport governing bodies will reconcile their
commitments to societal progress, whilst maintaining neutrality.
