The editors had only to supply a few bibliographical references and to correct a few misprints and errors. No substantive changes were made in the manu script except in one or two places where references to additional material appeared; since this material was not found in Rademacher's papers, these references were deleted. The editors are grateful to Springer-Verlag for their helpfulness and courtesy. Rademacher started work on the present volume no later than 1944; he was still working on it at the inception of his final illness. It represents the parts of analytic number theory that were of greatest interest to him. In den letzten J ahren seines Lebens arbeitete ERNST STEINITZ (gest. 29. 9. 1928) an einer zusammenfassenden Darstellung der Theorie der Polyeder, die er in mehreren Einzelpublikationen und auch in zwei Vorlesungen in Kiel (Wintersemester 1920/21 und 1923/24) behandelt hat. In seinem NachlaB fand sich ein unvollendetes Manuskript zu dem geplanten Buche. Bei genauer Durchsicht ergab sich, daB diese Aufzeichnungen fast druckfertig waren und den groBeren Teil eines breit angelegten Werkes bildeten, das uberall die Vorzuge des Mathe matikers STEINITZ zeigt, dieselbe unerhorte Sorgfalt, Grundlichkeit und systematische Einheitlichkeit, die seine schon klassisch gewordene "Algebraische Theorie der Korper" auszeichnet. Es konnte keinem Zweifel unterliegen, daB das nachgelassene Werk der mathematischen Offentlichkeit zugiinglich gemacht werden muBte, nicht nur aus Pietiit vor dem Namen STEINITZ, sondern vor aHem auch seiner inneren Qualitiit und Eigentumlichkeit halber. Das Manuskript bestand aus zwei dunnen Quartheften, von der Hand von STEINITZ selbst eng vollgeschrieben, und aus einer groBen Zahl geordneter Einzelbliitter, die nach seinem Diktat geschrieben worden sind. Es weist eine deutliche Lucke im zweiten Kapitel des zweiten Abschnittes auf, beginnt dann wieder mit dem dritten Kapitel und bricht im zweiten Kapitel des dritten Abschnittes abo Die vor nehmliche Au gabe des Herausgebers bestand darin, diese Lucken aus zufUllen und das Werk zum AbschluB zu bringen. Leider fand sich keinerlei Entwurf oder Gesamtdisposition in dem Nachla. l3."
