Every year since 1933 many of the world's leading intellectuals have met on Lake Maggiore to discuss the latest developments in philosophy, history, art and science and, in particular, to explore the mystical and symbolic in religion. The Eranos Meetings - named after the Greek word for a banquet where the guests bring the food - constitute one of the most important gatherings of scholars in the twentieth century. Mit der Zahl der Anwendungs- arten wuchsen die Anspriiche an die Leistungsfahigkeit der Werkstoffe. In unmittelbarem Zusammenhang damit zeigte es sich, wie wichtig die umfassende Kenntnis der Materialeigenschaften und der wahrend des Gebrauches eintretenden Reaktionen ist. Es gehort zu den groBen Ver- diensten von W. Die Leistungsfahigkeit elektrischer Spannungsregler hat man bisher nur an Hand der in ausgefuhrten Anlagen gemachten Erfahrungen beurteilen konnen. Wie sich Grosse und Dauer der nach Belastungs anderungen auch bei selbsttatig geregelten Generatoren unvermeid lichen vorubergehenden Spannungsschwankungen berechnen lasst, ist nicht bekannt, falls man Von den sogenannten tragen Reglern absieht. Es fehlt auch an einer klaren Erkenntnis des Einflusses der mecha nischen Eigenschaften des Reglers und der elektrischen Konstanten des geregelten Generators auf den Reguliervorgang. Meistens muss man sich jetzt bei der Beschaffung und bei dem Verkauf eines selbst tatigen Spannungsreglers mit der Gewahr begnugen, dass die dauernden Spannungsanderungen innerhalb enger Grenzen bleiben werden, was ja auch fur Betriebe genugt, in denen keine erheblichen plotzlichen Belastungsanderungen vorkommen. Arbeiten aber an einem zur Be leuchtung verwendeten Netze auch grossere Motoren, welche gelegentlich ein- und ausgeschaltet werden, so macht sich das Bedurfnis nach einem Spannungsregler geltend, welcher nicht nur die dauernden, sondern auch die vorubergehenden Spannungsschwankungen soweit beseitigt, dass man keine storenden Veranderungen der Lichtstarke der angeschlossenen Gluhlampen bemerken kann. Die wachsende Verbreitung von Uberlandzentralen, welche neben der Beleuchtung von Stadten auch grosse industrielle Betriebe speisen, wird aller Wahr scheinlichkeit nach dazu fuhren, dass man bei der Lieferung eines elektrischen Spannungsreglers auch fur die Dauer und die Grosse vorubergehender Spannungsschwankungen eine bestimmte Gewahr verlangen wird. Es handelt sich hierbei um solche Spannungs schwankungen, wie sie von einem Voltmeter mit einer Eigenschwingungs dauer von etwa 1/ Sekunde noch angezeigt werden."

In this book Han Thomas Adriaenssen offers the first comparative exploration of the sceptical reception of representationalism in medieval and early modern philosophy. Descartes is traditionally credited with inaugurating a new kind of scepticism by saying that the direct objects of perception are images in the mind, not external objects, but Adriaenssen shows that as early as the thirteenth century, critics had already found similar problems in Aquinas's theory of representation. He charts the attempts of philosophers in both periods to grapple with these problems, and shows how in order to address the challenges of scepticism and representation, modern philosophers in the wake of Descartes often breathed new life into old ideas, remoulding them in ways that we are just beginning to understand.
