With All Five Senses (Hardcover): Hans W. Cohn With All Five Senses (Hardcover)
Hans W. Cohn; Introduction by Michael Hamburger; Translated by Frederick G. Cohn
R209 Discovery Miles 2 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Poetry. The English poet Michael Hamburger, author of the introduction to the present volume, has long championed Hans W. Cohn, writing of his work: they are existential parables written with an extraordinary precision, and without the aid of rhetoric or conventional pathos. If they are all the more poignant for that it is because they have been refined and distilled to their essence, like certain short prose-parables by Kafka. Cohn's work] is distinguished by a scrupulous spareness and his poems are reductions of experience to its bare bones. WITH ALL FIVE SENSES is translated by the poet's brother, writer Frederick G. Cohn.

Else Lasker-Schuler - The Broken World (Paperback): Hans W. Cohn Else Lasker-Schuler - The Broken World (Paperback)
Hans W. Cohn
R962 Discovery Miles 9 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Else Lasker-Schuler (1869-1945) was a German-Jewish poet who died in exile in Jerusalem. This 1974 book was the first full-length treatment of her poetry in English. The aim of the author, a practising psychologist at the time of this book's original publication, in this study of the poet's life, was to see poetry as an expression of the deeper urges of the psyche. The book takes as a point of departure Peter Hille's remark that Lasker-Schuler was a 'Sappho whose world had broken apart'. Her world of experience was a constant swing between extremes: an intense longing for communication which, thwarted, led back to isolation and despair. The wish for contact and withdrawal from reality often coexist in irreconcilable conflict, only resolved by the poet's own acceptance of things as they are. She came closest to such acceptance in her search for God, which led to her religious poetry.

Existential Thought and Therapeutic Practice - An Introduction to Existential Psychotherapy (Paperback): Hans W. Cohn Existential Thought and Therapeutic Practice - An Introduction to Existential Psychotherapy (Paperback)
Hans W. Cohn
R1,229 Discovery Miles 12 290 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Although many practitioners have discovered existential-phenomenological thought, they may wonder what relevance these philosophical ideas have to their actual practice, to their day-to-day meetings with clients, and to the relationship between client and therapist. There is often a divide between thought and practice, and this book bridges that gap. In Existential Thought and Therapeutic Practice, author Hans W. Cohn introduces the history and ideas of existential phenomenology and existential psychotherapy and shows how therapeutic phenomena familiar to all therapists and counselors can be understood from an existential viewpoint. He also demonstrates how the existential approach opens up access to issues that other therapeutic orientations have neglected, such as the difficulty of choice, the burden of responsibility, and the inevitability of death. Existential Thought and Therapeutic Practice is clearly written and jargon-free. The existential approach is constantly compared to the relevant psychodynamic counterpart so that the reader can assess the unfamiliar against a background of the more familiar. The book will be of interest to training and practicing therapists and counselors and anyone concerned with new approaches in philosophy and psychotherapy.

Anyone interested in modern philosophy is familiar with the name of Martin Heidegger but there is a serious gap in even the most complete accounts of his life and thought. This is Heidegger's association with, and influence on, psychotherapy.

Hans C Cohn explores the role of Heidegger's thought in providing an alternative basis for psychotherapeutic practice to the dominant psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive approaches, also focusing strongly on the practical therapeutic relevance of Heidegger's ideas. This book will be essential reading for students and teachers of modern philosophy, as well as existential psychotherapists, and all practitioners interested in existential approaches to therapy.
