Nag Hammadi Deutsch I, 2001). Die mehrheitlich im 2. und 3. Jahrhundert entstandenen Texte, unter denen z.B. apokryphe Evangelien (etwa das Thomasevangelium) und bedeutsame Originalzeugnisse der Gnosis zu finden sind, gehoeren zu den wichtigsten handschriftlichen Neuentdeckungen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sie sind insbesondere fur die Bibelwissenschaften und die Kirchengeschichte von kaum zu uberschatzender Bedeutung. Der Berliner Arbeitskreis fur Koptisch-Gnostische Schriften wurde vor mehr als 30 Jahren durch Hans-Martin Schenke begrundet. Mit zahlreichen deutschen Erstubersetzungen und Textausgaben samt Kommentierungen sowie sehr vielen anderen Publikationen hat sich dieses wissenschaftliche Team als eines der weltweit fuhrenden Forschungszentren fur die Nag-Hammadi-Texte und andere koptische Texte etabliert.

One of the most important manuscripts discovered in recent times is the 4th century Codex Tchacos. It contains 4 texts, two of which (a oeThe Letter of Peter to Philipa and a oeThe [first Apocalypse] of Jamesa ) were already known from the finds at Nag Hammadi. The other two present hitherto unknown Gnostic writings (a oeThe Gospel of Judasa and a text which researchers have named a oeAllogenesa ). The best text and the best translation are presented in this classic introductory book to the "Gospel of Thomas". In December 1945, at the base of cliffs that run along the Nile River near the modern-day town of Nag Hammadi, an Egyptian farmer discovered a sealed jar containing thirteen ancient Coptic codices.
