The articles in this collection originated from an international symposium at the University of Haifa and centre around a major topic in German, European and American literature, i.e. the way in which Jewish self-definition, both positive and negative, has materialized as a product of the tensions between secular culture and society on the one hand, and Jewish tradition and religion on the other. The broad range of authors (most of them of German-speaking origin) necessarily results in an almost equally broad range of answers to this central question. The volume is dedicated to the memory of the Israeli literary scholar Chaim Shoham.

Analogical thinking, relations between microcosm and macrocosm, polarity and intensification, inspiration, magical, alchemistic, and magnetic/sympathetic concepts: key terms like these indicate the importance of the traditions of pansophist and holistic interpretation of the world in Goethe's literary and scientific works. Of equal significance is his engagement with 'universal wisdom' (Weltweisheit), as embodied in the philosophical and scientific tendencies of the age he lived in. The Geneva conference of the Swiss Goethe Society documented here casts light on Goethe's position in the rivalries tensions between old and new in his day.

In der Medizin und Pharmazie hat die religiose Reformbewegung des Pietismus ebenso profunde Wirkungen hinterlassen wie in Gesellschaft, Literatur, Sprache und Musik. Was heute als sanfte Medizin, ganzheitlich reflektierte Verantwortungsethik, psychosomatische Heilungsansatze bezeichnet wird, hat man hier vorbereitet gesehen. In Frankfurt am Main, Wirkungsort Johann Christian Senckenbergs wie des jungen Goethe, hat die Historische Kommission zur Erforschung des Pietismus erstmals eine Tagung durchgefuhrt, die auf Grundhaltungen, Argumente und weitervermittelte fruhneuzeitlich alchimistisch-sympathetische Traditionen bei 'erweckten' Hof-, Land- oder Stadtarzten und bei Laienmedizinern fokussiert war. Senckenbergs unermesslicher Nachlass (medizinische wie personliche Tagebucher) wird derzeit zur Erschliessung transkribiert. Der Frankfurter Arzt und Stifter war prominent eingebunden in ein Netzwerk von zumeist radikalpietistischen Arzten wie Dippel, Carl, Kampf, Goethes Arzt Metz, die oft zugleich literarisch produktiv waren und alchimische Medikamente produzierten. Verbindungen reichten bis Nordamerika (Ephrata). Arzte der Aufklarungsara nahmen Anregungen auf, psycho-physische Denktraditionen gingen zur Romantik weiter. Jenseits der bereits besser erforschten medizinischen Schule Halles entsteht ein erweitertes, differenzierteres Bild pietistischer Heilkunst. Die hier miterorterten Konnexe ins Feld der Literatur, Musik und Sprache werden exemplarisch vertieft durch Ertrage einer Marbacher Kommissionstagung.
