The Encyclopedia covers the leading contemporary domains of debate on social theory and the classical legacies of social thinkers from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, giving proper balance to both the European and North American traditions and to important new developments in the global self-understanding of sociology.

The field of brain imaging is developing at a rapid pace and has greatly advanced the areas of cognitive and clinical neuroscience. The availability of neuroimaging techniques, especially magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) and magnetic source imaging (MSI) has brought about breakthroughs in neuroscience. To obtain comprehensive information about the activity of the human brain, different analytical approaches should be complemented. Thus, in "intermodal multimodality" imaging, great efforts have been made to combine the highest spatial resolution (MRI, fMRI) with the best temporal resolution (MEG or EEG). "Intramodal multimodality" imaging combines various functional MRI techniques (e.g., fMRI, DTI, and/or morphometric/volumetric analysis). The multimodal approach is conceptually based on the combination of different noninvasive functional neuroimaging tools, their registration and cointegration. In particular, the combination of imaging applications that map different functional systems is useful, such as fMRI as a technique for the localization of cortical function and DTI as a technique for mapping of white matter fiber bundles or tracts. This booklet gives an insight into the wide field of multimodal imaging with respect to concepts, data acquisition, and postprocessing. Examples for intermodal and intramodal multimodality imaging are also demonstrated. Im Zeitalter der Globalisierung und Transnationalisierung ist die Institution nationaler Staatsburgerschaft ins Zentrum wissenschaftlicher und politischer Auseinandersetzungen geruckt. Prozesse der Entgrenzung, der partiellen De-Nationalisierung und des tendenziellen Souveranitatsverlustes des Nationalstaates haben die mit nationaler Staatsburgerschaft verbundenen Gewissheiten fraglich werden lassen. Der Band basiert auf der historisch-kritischen Edierung bisher unveroeffentlichter Manuskripte von Marx' "Citatenheft". Dieses stammt aus der konzeptionell wichtigen Entstehungsperiode des Manuskriptes "Zur Kritik der Politischen OEkonomie" (1861 - 1863).Im ersten Teil des Bandes nimmt der Autor in Auseinandersetzung mit Ernst Noltes "Marxismus und Industrielle Revolution" eine umfangliche sozialhistorische Einschatzung dieser Epoche vor. Auf dem Hintergrund der Theorie der sozialen Arbeit weist er im Marxschen Verstandnis des Begriffs der "industriellen Revolution" eine stark intentionale Komponente und im zeitgenoessischen Verstandnis von "Maschinerie" stark stilisierte und verdinglichte Bewaltigungsformen der Industrialisierung nach.

Der Band, den wir hier vorlegen, geht auf eine Tagung der Sektion Soziologische Theorien in der Deutschen Gesellschaft fur Soziologie uber "Vertragstheorien in den Sozialwissenschaften" zu ruck. Diese Sektionstagung, die vom 14. - 15. Oktober 1983 in Schloss Rauischholzhausen bei Giessen stattfand, wurde von Viktor Vanberg (Fairfax, USA) und Reinhard Wippler (Utrecht) organisiert. Die Organisation 'vor Ort' lag in den Handen von Bernhard Giesen und Wolfgang Schneider. Wir moechten nicht nur den genannten Personen fur ihre Arbeit danken, sondern auch der Universitat Giessen, die grosszugig ihre einzigartigen Tagungsraume in Rauischholzhausen zur Verfugung gestellt hat. Weiter danken wir der Universitat der Bundeswehr Munchen, die mit einem Druckkostenzu schuss die Publikation der Vortrage ermoeglicht hat. Alle Vortrage wurden fur die Drucklegung grundlich uberarbeitet. These skillfully written essays are based on the Georg Simmel Lectures delivered by Neil J. Smelser at Humboldt University in Berlin in the spring of 1995. It is a distillation of Smelser's reflections after nearly four decades of research, teaching, and thought in the field of sociology, the essays identify, as he says in the first chapter, '...some central problematics - those generic, recurrent, never resolved and never completely resolvable issues - that shape the work of the sociologist.' Each chapter considers a different level of sociological analysis: micro (the person and personal interaction), meso (groups, organizations, movements), macro (societies), and global (multi-societal).
