It's All About Freedom presents a comprehensive cross-section through nine decades of Tomi Ungerer's artistic work for the first time-from drawings from the nineteen-thirties to objects from the two thousand-tens. The exhibits selected shed new light on Ungerer's oeuvre by making it possible to comprehend the artistic dimension of the political and stylistic lines and breaks in his oeuvre as a 'freewheeling artist'. His passion for experimenting across genres and the interplay between drawing, collage, and assemblage through which he searched for identity and humanity is thus shown in his work again and again. Developed by the Deichtorhallen Hamburg / Sammlung Falckenberg in cooperation with the Tomi Ungerer Estate and the Musee Tomi Ungerer in Strasbourg, the volume brings together contributions on Tomi Ungerer's life's work by Thomas David, Belinda Grace Gardner, Aria Ungerer, and Therese Willer, with a foreword by Dirk Luckow and Harald Falckenberg.
Charlotte March was one of the leading international fashion photographers from the 1960s to the 1980s. The major retrospective at Deichtorhallen Hamburg lays the foundation for the rediscovery of the iconic photographer's oeuvre and offers a comprehensive overview of all of her creative periods for the first time. From her hitherto little-known early work, relating to the "Humanist Photography" movement, that reveals her sensitive eye for the margins of society in post-war Hamburg, took her to wholly unglamorous places, to her journeys to Italy in the 1960s, as well as her highly influential fashion and advertising photography. The narrative of her imagery for magazines such as twen, Stern, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Elle, and Vogue reveals an emancipatory attitude and evoke the notion of a new lifestyle and the social upheaval of the 1960s. The exhibition and catalog illuminate March's multifaceted work and attest to her status as one of the most important female photographers of the second half of the 20th century.
A characteristic of 20th- and 21st-century artistic production is that casual acquaintances and close intimates, friends, lovers, or sometimes even rivals come together to work collaboratively on the realization of a single work of art. Performance artist, sculptor, prankster, restauranteur, farmer, professional poker player and frontman of the 1980s Swiss electronic pop duo Yello, Dieter Meier (born 1945) brings a contagious sense of fun and lightness to all of his diverse activities. At Documenta 5, in 1972, Meier installed a commemorative plaque at the Kassel train station that read: "On 23 March 1994, from 3 to 4 pm, Dieter Meier will stand on this plaque." He honored the promise, and in the interim produced enough bodies of work for at least five artists: ephemeral junk sculptures, street performances, films and videos, books and, most famously, music, as one half of Yello. With international top ten singles such as "The Race" and "Oh Yeah," Yello has been one of the most influential and widely sampled electronica groups of the 1980s. This spectacular monograph celebrates Meier's many lives, from the late 1960s to the present, and includes a DVD of his early films, plus Yello music videos.
