Anthony de Jasay's work has been enormously influential, describing both a theoretical philosophical model for a stateless, liberal, free market order and offering analysis of and solutions to many of the technical economic problems associated with such a vision of society - most notably his work on the free rider and his return. In this book ten significant scholars in philosophy and political economy, including Nobel laureate in economics James Buchanan, pay tribute to the man and his work in a series of essays at once both respectful and critical. Ordered Anarchy focuses on three fundamental questions of libertarian thinking. Which are the basic libertarian principles and how do rights and liberties relate to each other? Is order possible and durable in an anarchic or quasi-anarchic society, and if so, under which preconditions? How and to what extent are the pillars of politics, such as the constitution, institutions and government, detrimental or beneficial to an enduring free society? While Narveson, Palmer and Bouillon focus on the first of these questions, the late Radnitzky and van Dun address the second. Benson, Holcombe and Kliemt provide answers to question number three, while Buchanan and Little highlight the role of Anthony de Jasay in this debate and the inspiration that his thinking has given to the authors of this volume.

Through detailed examination and reflection, this book presents the thesis that many themes in business ethics are discussed either unduly intensely, unbalanced or rarely, measured against what business ethics as a science should deliver. It does so by offering an answer to one of the most crucial questions in business ethics, namely that of justice in moral economic actions. Bouillon develops an original definition of morally just economic action in the course of three chapters, and subsequently uses it as yardstick, from which, in chapter four, he reads which of the relevant concepts and topics in business ethics ask for restatement. As a side-product Bouillon discloses logical inconsistencies in prominent political philosophies, and the consequences of these inconsistencies for maldevelopments in business ethics. Der GroBteil des Bandes verdankt seine Entstehung einem kleinen internationalen Kolloquium, das im Herbst 1988 in Wien im Hotel Ambassador stattfand. Nach dem Kolloquium wurden die Beitrage von den Autoren nochmals im Lichte der Diskussion tiberarbeitet. Nicht alle Teilnehmer haben Beitrage geliefert - so ha- ben zwei Wirtschaftswissenschaftler aus Peking ihre Beitrage im Entwurfsstadium belassen und nicht verOffentlicht, und auch ein paar neue Beitrage sind hinzuge- kommen. Die einzelnen Essays gliedern sich je nach ihrem Schwerpunkt natiirlich in theoretische Arbeiten und in Fallstudien. Es ist keine Dbertreibung zu behaupten, daB ordnungspolitisches Handeln in Europa niemals so dringend erforderlich war wie nach den dramatischen Ereignis- sen von 1989. Was Deutschland betrifft, so besteht (pessimisten wtirden sagen 'bestand' - und meinen, sie sei bereits vertan) die einmalige Chance, die Wirt- schaftsverfassung des Wettbewerbs in den neuen Bundeslandern weit tiber dieje- nigen Standards hinaus aktionsfahig zu machen, die zur Zeit in den alten Bundes- landern gelten. Die ordnungspolitische Realitat in der Bundesrepublik ist heute von Ludwig Erhard weit entfernt; die Bundesrepublik treibt in die korporativisti- sche Richtung (Giersch 1988). Wenn es gelange, Bereiche, die in der BRD offent- lich-rechtlich organisiert sind, in der ehemaligen DDR privatwirtschaftlich zu or- ganisieren, wettbewerbliche Bedingungen dort zu schaffen, wo dies in der BRD entweder nicht gelungen ist oder durch eine Zunahme an Staatsinterventionismus, Protektionismus usf. nicht mehr der Fall ist, wtirde das auf die alten Bundeslander zurtickwirken und dort eine Liberalisierungswelle auslOsen.
