A Missionary's Daughter in India - An Autobiography (Paperback): Ruth Lightfoot Cordell A Missionary's Daughter in India - An Autobiography (Paperback)
Ruth Lightfoot Cordell; Contributions by Jr. and Harold Byler Jr. Harold Knoll
R553 Discovery Miles 5 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is the autobiography of Ruth Cordell, the daughter of Reverend Le Roy and Mrs. Grace Lightfoot, missionaries to India for thirteen years between 1920 and 1951. It describes, in humorous and realistic detail, the exciting and unusual experiences of Ruth's life as a missionary's daughter in India. Although born in the United States in 1918, she had the unique experience of growing up and going to school in primitive India in the early 1920's. She returned to the United States to attend College in Michigan and taught school for a short time before marrying and having children. Afterwards, she returned to teaching and retired in 1980. After retiring, she and her husband enjoyed traveling in Europe, Mexico, and the USA. After his death in 1966, she continued to travel extensively and in 1997 revisited India. She now lives in Michigan where she is active in local affairs at the golden age of 90 years.

Sailing Around the World The Wrong Way Volume VII - The Red Sea (Paperback): Jr. Harold Knoll, Jr. Harold Byler Sailing Around the World The Wrong Way Volume VII - The Red Sea (Paperback)
Jr. Harold Knoll, Jr. Harold Byler
R533 Discovery Miles 5 330 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is the true story of one man's attempt to live out his lifelong dream of sailing around the world to strange foreign ports in his own sailboat. Upon retiring from teaching school and farming in Michigan, Harold Knoll, Jr. left his forthcoming sedentary life, took his sailboat down to the Gulf, and headed around the world. Few men have the courage to do this, even though most of us have these dreams. Volume I covered the first part of his journey from Michigan to Trinidad. Volume II covered his journey from Trinidad to Spain and through France to Amsterdam and Scandinavia. Volume III covered the third part of his journey from Amsterdam around the British Isles, through the French canals to the Mediterranean, and down the coast of Italy. Volume IV covers his trip from Rome to Greece and through the Aegean Sea to Turkey. Volume V covers his trip through the Black Sea and back to Turkey. Volume VI covers his trip from Turkey to the Red Sea and this Volume VII covers his trip down the Red Sea. Captain Knoll, a true free spirit, picks up crew as he travels along. In the process, he meets many very fascinating people and has many thrilling, and sometimes humorous, experiences. Forthcoming volumes will cover the future trips that he takes as he proceeds on his voyage around the world the wrong way (against the prevailing winds).

Texas Politics and Greed (Paperback): Ross McSwain, Harold Byler Texas Politics and Greed (Paperback)
Ross McSwain, Harold Byler
R495 Discovery Miles 4 950 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In late 1954 Texas was rocked by a scandal in its $100 million Veterans' Land Program that included attempted murder, bribery, and political intrigue. A West Texas attorney named Sam McCollum III was gravely injured when he turned the ignition key on his car and five sticks of dynamite planted under the hood exploded, rocking the town and leaving the attorney near death with maimed legs and unable to testify at the trials. Another witness was threatened and his house was burned. Texas Ranger and DPS investigations were derailed, and State Senators were involved in the bribery and fraud. The scandal occupied Texas and National news reports for more than three years. Two hundred and fifty indictments were returned against prominent land promoters and dealers in nine counties. Several high profile trials were conducted, resulting in prison sentences for the Texas Land Commissioner and two land promoters. The book includes trial transcripts and personal interviews with participants, including attorney Sam McCollum III. As a result of the scandal, Attorney General John Ben Sheppard and Governor Allan Shivers were forced to retire from politics. Ross McSwain, a retired journalist and investigative reporter, and Harold Byler, an experienced author, have collaborated on the research and writing of this book. Both grew up in Brady, Texas, a focal point of the scandal, and both knew many of the participants personally.
