Own composition, use composition, and make composition your own in
your photographs! Of all the magical elixirs that make up a
successful photograph, composition is perhaps the most fundamental,
and at the same time the most elusive. What makes a composition
good ? It s hard to define exactly, but we instinctively recognize
good composition when we see it. There is an undeniable emotional
response when a composition resonates with and complements the
subject matter of an image. But traditional attempts to define good
composition and to pass on rules for good compositional
construction are often doomed to failure. The truth is, there are
no hard and fast rules. Rules eliminate experimentation and
spontaneity, which are crucial for creating compelling, dynamic,
and exciting compositions. The best compositions contain an element
of the unexpected. Expect the unexpected! is perhaps the only
viable rule of composition. To create exciting compositions, you
must have a willingness to embrace serendipity and change as part
of your artistic practice. After all, composition is a process, not
a result. In Composition & Photography, photographer and
bestselling author Harold Davis teaches you how to perceive
patterns and abstractions and incorporate them into your
image-making process. If one of the goals of photography is to show
viewers things that are new, or things they haven t seen before, or
things they have seen many times but need to see anew, then it s
with the thoughtful and considered use of composition that you do
that. In this book, you ll learn how to reduce your subject matter
to the fundamentals, and to show familiar subjects in unfamiliar,
novel ways. Harold covers topics and themes such as: ? Lines and
circles ? Rectangles ? Combinations ? Repetition ? Symmetry and
asymmetry ? Abstraction ? Entering and exiting ? Vanishing points
and perspective ? Emphasis ? Designing within a frame ? Creating
order from chaos. Composition & Photography will help you find
the tools and visual vocabulary to creatively design your
photographs. Regardless of the genre and kind of photography you
practice, you ll learn to create powerful compositions that
incorporate structure and form into your work in ways that best
support your images. Along the way, Harold shows and discusses his
own work relating to each compositional element or theme he s
exploring. And featured throughout the book are exercises about
flexibility and process, designed to spur your creativity and help
you begin an internal creative discussion.
Coming from the perspective that true inspiration and great image
making are at the core of any high-level photographic endeavour,
Achieving Your Potential as a Digital Photographer presents an
organized and cohesive plan for kickstarting creativity, and then
taking the resulting work into the real world. The ideas presented
have been formulated by Harold Davis over many years working as a
creative artist and award-wining photographer, and in the
celebrated workshops he has developed and led all around the world.
These concepts are presented with accompanying exercises so that
readers can put them into everyday practice as well as workbook
pages bound into the book for note taking and journaling. This book
will enrich your photographic practice whether the goal is simply
to enrich your photography or to make money from your work.
Update: The Kindle version of Monochromatic HDR Photography:
Shooting and Processing Black & White High Dynamic Range Photos
currently available for sale has been corrected and updated to
address formatting issues. Monochromatic HDR Photography is the
first book intended to show photographers how to work at the
intersection of two up-and-coming trends that are at the forefront
of the digital revolution: Black & White and High Dynamic Range
imaging. The book explains techniques for extending dynamic range,
monochromatic conversion methods and best practices where the two
technologies intersect. Since successful digital monochromatic
image creation generally requires using the color information
inherent in RAW exposures, most case studies will be presented in
full color. In addition, Monochromatic HDR Photography provides
extensive coverage of the creative vision required to successfully
create monochromatic HDR images and the workflow necessary to make
art prints from this specialized image making technique.

This is the story of how Jews from Lithuania, particularly from the
Krottingen area, chose to remake their community in Sunderland in
the North East of England. They were impoverished, without homes
and didn't speak English but they remained an Orthodox community in
a strange country. It seems that secular success and the demands of
total Jewish observance should be an impossible combination. The
Sunderland Beth Hamedresh proved that this was not inevitable. The
congregation became famous wherever observant Jews gathered and
their story is inspiring.

You may be passionate about photography, and own a digital SLR with
perhaps more advanced equipment as well. But do the photographs you
take with this powerful equipment come out as well as you'd like?
With this fascinating and beautifully illustrated book, you learn
how to apply the techniques and principles of classic photography
so you can make great images with today's digital equipment. Harold
Davis, author and renowned fine art photographer, puts the focus in
Practical Artistry on light and exposure, two crucial concepts you
need to understand and master if you are to truly capture the
images you see. Davis presents a generous number of his own images
in each chapter, complete with technical information and an
explanation of what he was trying to achieve. These striking
photographs not only illustrate the lesson at hand, but also serve
as inspiration for your own efforts.Browsing the photographs alone
will tell you a lot. The topics covered in this book include:
camera, lenses, and equipment; understanding exposure and measuring
light; relationship of aperture to shutter speed and ISO; working
with depth of field; natural lighting, studio lighting, and the use
of flash; light and color temperature; working with white balance;
photographing at dawn or dusk; photography at night; capturing
motion; telling a story with your image; capturing people, places,
and things; setting up a digital workflow; RAW processing and
double RAW processing; adjusting exposure and reducing noise; Black
& white photography; and much more. Concise and to the point,
"Practical Artistry" clearly demonstrates that photography,
essentially, is writing with light, and that the type of images you
produce depend on the many choices you have for using that skill.
Harold Davis gives you an array of choices in full living color.
