The papers collected in this volume were originally presented at the conference on Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning that was held in Mierlo, the Netherlands in July 1992. This conference was organized as one of the events celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at Eindhoven University of Technology. The organizing committee had a strong feeling that many interesting developments in this area were emerging within different institutional frameworks and informal networks that do not interact frequently. For example, scholars working on architectural problems are not particularly familiar with computer applications in urban planning. Likewise, although many computer-aided design systems claim to be based on principles of design methodology, serious discussions on the methodological underpinnings of such systems are relatively scarce. Consequently, we may have little opportunity to learn how scholars in closely related disciplines approach specific design or planning problems.

As editors of this volume we would like to express our gratitude to the contributing authors who have delivered these highly relevant and inspiring chapters and to the international scientific committee for their help in the review and editing. The International Conference on Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning is organised bi-annually by the Eindhoven University of Technology. This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the eighth conference that was held at the Kapellerput Conference Centre in the village of Heeze, near Eindhoven, The Netherlands, from 4 to 7 July, 2006.

Traditionally, the DDSS conferences aim to be a platform for both starting and experienced researchers who focus on the development and application of computer support in the areas of urban planning and architectural design. This results in an interesting mix of well-established research projects and first explorations. It also leads to a very valuable cross-over of theories, methods, and technologies for support systems in the two different areas, architecture and urban planning. It contains a series of papers on spatial choice dynamics and dynamical spatial systems which were presented at the colloquium, together with a few other soll icited ones. The book is intended primarily as a state-of-the art review of mainly European research on these two fastly growing problem areas. As a consequence of this decision, the book contains a selection of papers that differs in terms of focus, level of sophistication and conceptual background. Evidently, the dissimination of ideas and computer software is a time-related phenomenon, which in the European context is amplified by differences in language, the profile of geography and the formal training of geographers. The book reflects such differences. It would have been impossible to produce this book without the support of the various European study groups on theoretical and quantitative geography. Without their help the meetings from which this volumes originates would not have been held in the first place. We are also indebted to the Royal Dutch Academy of Science for partly funding the colloquium, and to SISWO and TNOjPSC for providing general support in the organisation of the conference.
