The twenty thematic chapters in this book provide a broad set of
perspectives on the plight, possibilities and opportunities of
urban transport in the developing world, set against the challenges
of sustainable development. The contributors expertly set the
international context of transport policymaking and planning for
developing cities and present a critical review of recent
developments that have taken place and which offer lessons for the
future. The special features that distinguish this book are: its
multiple institutional perspectives on transport in urban
development of developing cities; its efforts to link
sustainability with urban transport and other development concerns;
and its understanding of the consequences of globalism in choices
and obligations for urban transport. This Handbook will prove
invaluable for professional practitioners and academics engaged in
and concerned with the future of movement in cities of the
developing world. It will also be of interest to students of urban
transport and city planning, particularly those from developing
countries. Politicians, policymakers and international development
agencies and investors, as well as those working for international
non-government organizations wishing to familiarize themselves with
the mounting transportation challenges of developing cities, will
also find this book a source of inspiration. Contributors: A.

Originally published in 1995, this monograph examines a
developmental approach to urban transport planning, with reference
to Indonesia. It provides a profile of the country, outlining
Indonesia’s geography and population, historical and political
background, economic profile and constraints on development. Recent
trends in Indonesian development are outlined. Indonesian urban
transport demand and supply are analysed, and policy and planning
frameworks for urban transport set out, including national policy
and financial and institutional issues. Factors affecting urban
transport are considered such as settlement characteristics and
matching of transport systems with settlement hierarchy. The
applicability of a developmental approach to urban transport
planning for Indonesia is analysed with reference to experience in
industrialized nations and the Third World.

Cities within the developing world experience a form of urban
development which is different to those in more industrialised
countries. Rates of growth are usually much more dramatic, housing
and transport are often provided informally, and institutional
support for urban management is also much weaker. The crux of this
book, first published in 1990, lies in the idea that urban
transport planning cannot be viewed in isolation from this wider
development context. Making special reference to a number of
countries, including Brazil, India and Indonesia, chapters discuss
problems of urban transport planning, deficiencies in the theory
and practice of conventional transport planning, and the emerging
alternatives in the countries under examination. This work
addresses problems that are still of great concern to urban policy
planners, professionals and academics, as well as students from the
fields of development studies, urban geography and planning,
architecture and civil engineering.
First published in 1998, this volume is certain to be the
definitive work about the practice of land-use and transport
planning in Hong Kong. Dimitriou and Cook explore the historical
developments, current issues and problems, policy and planning
responses and new directions. Hong Kong has experienced remarkable
economic growth as the 'Gateway to China' and its land-use has
become a model for other cities in the region and for China as a
whole.
The book brings together, in a single source, a coherent set of
quality writings in the field of strategic regional planning. It
aims to fulfill a need generated by a renewed emphasis in the UK on
strategic regional planning enshrined in new style spatial
strategies through recent legislation, including the Planning and
Compulsory Purchase Bill (soon to become an Act). This legislation
places upon regional bodies demands that they are currently poorly
equipped to fulfill through lack of personnel experienced and
trained in planning at this scale.
In five parts the book looks at the evolution of regional planning,
the concepts involved, the spatial implications of regional
economic development policies, the methods and techniques needed
and finally at how strategic regional planning is currently put
into practice in three regions with different priorities.
This book will be of interest to students of strategic and regional
planning, as well as practitioners and policy makers.
