Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.

Provides a brief illustrated history of Leonardo da Vinci for the
teenage market with emphasis on his artistic contributions and his
scientific inventions. Includes a frank discussion of the three
great challenges that drove his desire to succeed: his illegitimate
birth, his left-handness, and his probable homosexuality. Includes
a timeline of his life and events occurring elsewhere in the world.
Structural Phase Transitions II, like its predecessor (Topics in
Current Physics, Vol. 23), presents selected methods and recent
advances in the experimental investigation of phase transitions in
solids. The two chapters in this volume deal with electron
paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and with nuclear magnetic and nuclear
quadrupole resonance (NMR-NQR). Both techniques are particularly
sensitive to local properties. The chapter on EPR concentrates
largely on the investigation of static properties, including
mean-field behaviour, critical and multicritical phenomena, whilst
NMR is shown to be a powerful tool for studying nonlinear dynamics,
incommensurate transitions, and disordered systems. This book will
serve as an excellent introduction to the methodology and
applications of EPR and NMR-NQR for all those wishing to become
acquainted with these important tools for studying structural phase
transitions.
This volume contains the notes of lectures given at the school on
"Nonlinear Dy namics in Solids" held at the Physikzentrum Bad
Honnef, 2-6 October 1989 under the patronage of the Deutsche
Physikalische Gesellschaft. Nonlinear dynamics has become a highly
active research area, owing to many interesting developments during
the last three decades in the theoretical analysis of dynamical
processes in both Hamiltonian and dissipative systems. Research has
been focused on a variety of problems, such as the characteristics
of regular and chaotic motion in Hamiltonian dynamics, the problem
of quantum chaos, the forma tion and properties of solitary
spatio-temporal structures, the occurrence of strange attractors in
dissipative systems, and the bifurcation scenarios leading to
complex time behaviour. Until recently, predictions of the theory
have been tested predominantly on insta bilities in hydrodynamic
systems, where many interesting experiments have provided valuable
input and have led to a fruitful interaction between experiment and
theory. Fluid systems are certainly good candidates for performing
clean experiments free from disturbing influences: with fluids,
compared to solids, it is simpler to prepare good samples, the
relevant length and time scales are in easily accessible ranges,
and it is possible to do measurements "inside" the fluid, because
it can be filled in after the construction of the apparatus.
Further, the theory describing the macroscopic dynamics of fluids
is well established and contains only very few parameters, all of
which have well-known values."
Random House presents the audiobook edition of Cari Mora, written
by Thomas Harris. ________________________________ From the creator
of Hannibal Lecter and The Silence of the Lambs comes a story of
evil, greed and the consequences of dark obsession.
________________________________ Twenty-five million dollars in
cartel gold lies hidden beneath a mansion on the Miami Beach
waterfront. Ruthless men have tracked it for years. Leading the
pack is Hans-Peter Schneider. Driven by unspeakable appetites, he
makes a living fleshing out the violent fantasies of other, richer
men. Cari Mora, caretaker of the house, has escaped from the
violence in her native country. She stays in Miami on a wobbly
Temporary Protected Status, subject to the iron whim of ICE. She
works at many jobs to survive. Beautiful, marked by war, Cari
catches the eye of Hans-Peter as he closes in on the treasure. But
Cari Mora has surprising skills, and her will to survive has been
tested before. Monsters lurk in the crevices between male desire
and female survival. No other writer in the last century has
conjured those monsters with more terrifying brilliance than Thomas
Harris. Cari Mora, his sixth novel, is the long-awaited return of
an American master. ________________________________ 'The last two
decades of 19th century popular fiction were dominated by Conan
Doyle and Sherlock Homes. A century on, suspense literature has
achieved their equals in Thomas Harris.' GUARDIAN 'Harris's writing
bears the hallmarks of honed perfection.' THE TIMES
This beautifully crafted book collects images, which were created
during the process of research in all fields of theoretical
biology. Data analysis, numerical treatment of a model, or
simulation results yield stunning images, which represent pieces of
art just by themselves. The approach of the book is to present for
each piece of visualization a lucid synopsis of the scientific
background as well as an outline of the artistic vision.
