Sponsoring Nature - Environmental Philanthropy for Conservation (Hardcover): Maano Ramutsindela, Marja Spierenburg, Harry Wels Sponsoring Nature - Environmental Philanthropy for Conservation (Hardcover)
Maano Ramutsindela, Marja Spierenburg, Harry Wels
R4,496 Discovery Miles 44 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Saving the world's flora and fauna, especially high-profile examples such as chimpanzees, whales and the tropical rain forests, is big business. Individuals and companies channel their resources to the preservation of nature through various ways, one of which is the funding of environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs). This book is the first to comprehensively address this issue and focus on a dominant theme in environmental philanthropy, the links between ENGOs and CBOs and their sponsors, especially the private sector.

It has been argued that donor support is based on recipient's perceived expertise and needs, with no favouritism of flagship environmental organizations as recipients of donor funds. A counterview holds that the private sector prefers to fund mainstream ENGOs for environmental research and policy reforms congenial to industrial capital. The authors show that the debate about these arguments, together with the empirical evidence on which they are based, may shed light on certain aspects of the nature of environmental philanthropy. The book evaluates practical examples of environmental philanthropy from Africa and elsewhere against philosophical questions about the material and geographical expressions of philanthropy, and the North-South connections among philanthropists and ENGOs and CBOs.

Nature Conservation in Southern Africa - Morality and Marginality: Towards Sentient Conservation? (Paperback): Jan-Bart Gewald,... Nature Conservation in Southern Africa - Morality and Marginality: Towards Sentient Conservation? (Paperback)
Jan-Bart Gewald, Marja Spierenburg, Harry Wels
R2,050 Discovery Miles 20 500 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Nature conservation in southern Africa has always been characterised by an interplay between Capital, specific understandings of Morality, and forms of Militarism, that are all dependent upon the shared subservience and marginalization of animals and certain groups of people in society. Although the subjectivity of people has been rendered visible in earlier publications on histories of conservation in southern Africa, the subjectivity of animals is hardly ever seriously considered or explicitly dealt with. In this edited volume the subjectivity and sentience of animals is explicitly included. The contributors argue that the shared human and animal marginalisation and agency in nature conservation in southern Africa (and beyond) could and should be further explored under the label of 'sentient conservation'. Contributors are Malcolm Draper, Vupenyu Dzingirai, Jan-Bart Gewald, Michael Glover, Paul Hebinck, Tariro Kamuti, Lindiwe Mangwanya, Albert Manhamo, Dhoya Snijders, Marja Spierenburg, Sandra Swart, Harry Wels.

Securing Wilderness Landscapes in South Africa - Nick Steele, Private Wildlife Conservancies and Saving Rhinos (Paperback):... Securing Wilderness Landscapes in South Africa - Nick Steele, Private Wildlife Conservancies and Saving Rhinos (Paperback)
Harry Wels
R1,544 Discovery Miles 15 440 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Private wildlife conservation is booming business in South Africa! Nick Steele stood at the cradle of this development in the politically turbulent 1970s and 1980s, by stimulating farmers in Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal) to pool resources in order to restore wilderness landscapes, but at the same time improve their security situation in cooperative conservancy structures. His involvement in Operation Rhino in the 1960s and subsequent networks to save the rhino from extinction, brought him into controversial military (oriented) networks around the Western world. The author's unique access to his private diaries paints a personal picture of this controversial conservationist.

Competing Jurisdictions - Settling land claims in Africa (Paperback): Sandra Evers, Marja Spierenburg, Harry Wels Competing Jurisdictions - Settling land claims in Africa (Paperback)
Sandra Evers, Marja Spierenburg, Harry Wels

This book is about the politicking and strife over land between various stakeholders on the African continent, including Madagascar. It is about attempts to control land tenure 'from above' and about local manoeuvring 'from below'. The contributing authors analyse the intricate relations between the central government, the local government and grassroots level institutions.

Sierk Ybema, Dvora Yanow, Harry Wels, Frans H. Kamsteeg
R2,011 Discovery Miles 20 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Just as newspapers do not, typically, engage with the ordinary experiences of people's daily lives, so organizational studies has also tended largely to ignore the humdrum, everyday experiences of people working in organizations. However, ethnographic approaches provide in-depth and up-close understandings of how the 'everyday-ness' of work is organized and how, in turn, work itself organizes people and the societies they inhabit. Organizational Ethnography brings contributions from leading scholars in organizational studies that serve to unpack an ethnographic perspective on organizations and organizational research. The authors explore the particular problems faced by organizational ethnographers, including: - questions of gaining access to research sites within organizations; - the many styles of writing organizational ethnography; - the role of friendship relations in the field; - problems of distance and closeness; - the doing of at-home ethnography; - ethical issues; - standards for evaluating ethnographic work. This book is a vital resource for organizational scholars and students doing or writing ethnography in the fields of business and management, public administration, education, health care, social work, or any related field in which organizations play a role.
