Studies on Retinal and Choroidal Disorders examines the role that
oxidative and nitrosative stress plays in the complex physiology
and pathophysiology of the retina and choroid. Both the basic
science researcher and the clinical practitioner can use this book
as a guide to the current understanding of retinal and choroidal
cellular mechanisms involved in aging and disease. Beginning with a
review of oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathoetiology of
AMD and a review of the complement system in the retina, the book
then takes a detailed look at oxidative stress in lipid metabolism
and oxidized lipoproteins in the retina. It examines the
anti-apoptotic activity of -crystallins in the presence of
glutathione, oxidative stress in the mitochondria and endoplasmic
reticulum, the role of iron in retinal disease, the mechanisms of
pathological VEGF expression, NAPDH oxidase mechanisms, and
Hepatocyte Growth Factor in oxidative stress in the retina. A
detailed look at the Ccl2-/-/Cx3cr1-/- mouse model of AMD follows.
Then a detailed examination of the systemic changes in AMD is
followed by a discussion of cerium oxide nanoparticle reduction of
oxidative stress. Two chapters discuss progenitor cells in the
cause and treatment of retinal diseases including AMD and diabetic
retinopathy. Natural compounds in the prevention and treatment of
retinal diseases are exhaustively presented, followed by a chapter
on serotonin 5-HT1A receptor agonists in oxidative stress of the
retina. The current anti-VEGF treatment strategies of neovascular
AMD are then given. The volume continues with a detailed look at
nitric oxide and inducible nitric oxide synthase in retinal
vascular disease, an explanation of an in vivo technique of
studying the effect of lipid hydroperoxides on circulating
leucocytes in the retina, an excellent review of oxidative stress
in retinopathy of prematurity, and a look at VEGF induced oxidative
stress in the retinal ganglion cell. The book ends with a detail
examination of the role of carotenoids in retinal health and
disease. These 31 chapters summarize what is known about oxidative
stress in retinal and choroidal disorders. All those involved with
degenerative diseases of the eye will find Studies on Retinal and
Choroidal Disorders to be illuminating and comprehensive.
Purdah, which can be formal law or informal custom, involves
keeping women segregated from society, restricting their
independence, and obliging them to dress in clothing that fully
covers them. First published by Kegan Paul in 1932, this was a
seminal book for the women's rights movement in general, and the
Indian Woman's Movement in particular, and remains highly relevant
today, as Indian, Islamic and Asian women continue to feel the
conflict between modernity and tradition. Swiss by birth and
married to an Indian, the author had a unique opportunity to see
life in India from the perspective of women in purdah. Beginning in
the Vedic period, she shows how the institution of purdah developed
over time, describes purdah as long practiced in India, and then
details the various reform and suffragette measures undertaken to
eradicate it and the effect of the Nationalist movement on Indian
women's freedom. There are clear parallels with women in other
countries. In recent decades, purdah is once again reasserting
itself in parts of India and elsewhere as conservative forces gain
ground. This important work gives insight into the roots and
strength of this tradition.
First published in 2006. Purdah, which can be formal law or
informal custom, involves keeping women segregated from society,
restricting their independence and regulating their dress. This
classic work, published in 1032 was the first accurate description
of the institution of Purdah, its effects on the women of India and
their rising revolt against it. Written by a woman who herself
lived the life pictured in the books, this was a seminal book for
the women's rights movement and general and Indian's women's
movement in particular.

The two-volume set LNCS 7649 + 7650 constitutes the refereed
proceedings of the 11th International Semantic Web Conference, ISWC
2012, held in Boston, MA, USA, in November 2012. The International
Semantic Web Conference is the premier forum for Semantic Web
research, where cutting edge scientific results and technological
innovations are presented, where problems and solutions are
discussed, and where the future of this vision is being developed.
It brings together specialists in fields such as artificial
intelligence, databases, social networks, distributed computing,
Web engineering, information systems, human-computer interaction,
natural language processing, and the social sciences. Volume 1
contains a total of 41 papers which were presented in the research
track. They were carefully reviewed and selected from 186
submissions. Volume 2 contains 17 papers from the in-use track
which were accepted from 77 submissions. In addition, it presents 8
contributions to the evaluations and experiments track and 7 long
papers and 8 short papers of the doctoral consortium.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 12th International
Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, WISE 2011, held
in Sydney, Australia, in October 2011.
The 17 revised full papers and 11 revised short papers presented
together with 7 demo papers were carefully reviewed and selected
from 96 submissions. The papers contained in these proceedings
address challenging issues in software services, Web application
engineering and modelling, Web search, social networks, Web
semantics, and information retrieval and extraction.
This volume contains the papers from the technical programmeof the
5th Eu- pean Semantic Web Conference, ESWC 2008, that took place
during June 1-5, 2008 in Tenerife, Islas Canarias, Spain. ESWC 2008
was the latest in a series of annual, international events foc- ing
on the dissemination and discussion of the latest research and
applications of Semantic Web technologies. The call for papers saw
over 270 submissions, a comparable ?gure to the previous year,
indicating that the conference series has reached a certain level
of maturity. The review process was organized - ing a two-tiered
system. First, each submission was reviewed by at least three
members of the ProgrammeCommittee. Submissions were also assignedto
a - niorProgrammeCommitteemember, wholed
discussionsbetweenreviewersand provided a metareview and
provisional decision. A physical Programme C- mittee meeting was
then held, where the ?nal decisions weremade. Competition was as
strong as ever, and the Programme Committee selected 51 papers to
be presented at the conference. In addition to the technical
research paper track, a system demo track was included, withits
ownreviewprocess. Twenty-?vedemo paperswereselectedfor publication.
System demo authors were given the opportunity to present their
workin dedicated sessionsduring the conference, while anevening
receptionwas also devoted to the presentation of posters and
demonstrations of systems. As in past years, ESWC subscribed to the
call to "eat our own dog food,"

This book develops a conceptual framework for the relationship
between organisation and output, and applies it to the analysis of
German and British export support services. These findings help to
explain why one organisation may be different from another, but
equally effective and efficient, and why no panacea for effective
and efficient organisation has been found. They also suggest angles
from which existing organisations and blueprints of 'better'
organisations can be examined.
