In this revised 2017 edition of The Prison Speaks the author grapples with the fact that, 15 years after the publication of the first edition of the book in 2003, the problems in the South African prison system remain unaddressed. Issues revisited in this edition include: a brief history of prisons in South Africa; statistics on crime and punishment; overcrowding; the profile of a South African prisoner; male rape; human rights; the Number Gangs; and an outline of a group work programme that combined the factual with the experimental in a face-to-face situation with inmates.
