This book explores how First World War commemoration events are
presented, reported and mediated on the websites of mainstream
daily newspapers from seven European countries. The book is the
result of a research group - DIREPA-EUROPE (Discours,
representations, passe de l'Europe), part of Lemel research network
- characterized by a shared interest in media discourse and online
newspapers. It presents a fluid analysis chain on the commemoration
discourse generated by the WWI Armistice Centenary in 2018, and
will be of interest not only to scholars of discourse and media
studies, but also of European history, cultural memory, journalism
and conflict studies.
This is the first translation into English of early phenomenologist
Hedwig Conrad-Martius’ Metaphysical Conversations, originally
published in 1921. Conrad-Martius was one of Husserl’s first
students, an important part of the Göttingen Phenomenology Circle
and mentor to Edith Stein, Jean Héring, and other early
phenomenologists. The present volume provides the full German and
English texts of the conversations, a phenomenological discussion
of the nature of the human, examining the nature of body, soul, and
spirit, and drawing distinctions between plants, animals, humans,
and various other beings. The volume also includes two important
essays on phenomenology, in which Conrad-Martius distinguishes
between the phenomenological approaches of Husserl, Heidegger, and
the more ontological approach of the Göttingen school of
phenomenology. She is critical of Husserl’s "transcendental" and
Heidegger’s "existential" approach. The conversations illustrate
her use of the phenomenological method for fundamental
investigations into the nature (or Wesen) of things.
This volume provides a comprehensive selection of recent studies
addressing insect hearing and acoustic communication. The variety
of signalling behaviours and hearing organs makes insects highly
suitable animals for exploring and analysing signal generation and
hearing in the context of neural processing, ecology, evolution and
genetics. Across a variety of hearing species like moths, crickets,
bush-crickets, grasshoppers, cicadas and flies, the leading
researchers in the field cover recent scientific progress and
address key points in current research, such as:
. How can we approach the evolution of hearing in insects and
what is the developmental and neural origin of the auditory
organs?
. How are hearing and sound production embedded in the natural
lifestyle of the animals, allowing intraspecific communication but
also predator avoidance and even predation?
. What are the functional properties of hearing organs and how
are they achieved at the molecular, biophysical and neural
levels?
. What are the neural mechanisms of central auditory processing
and signal generation?
The book is intended for students and researchers both inside
and outside of the fascinating field of bioacoustics and aims to
foster understanding of hearing and acoustic communication in
insects."
This book gives insight in the vivid research area of early
mathematics learning. The collection of selected papers mirror the
research topics presented at the third POEM conference.
Thematically, the volume reflects the importance of this relatively
new field of research. Structurally, the book tries to guide the
reader through a variety of research aims and issues and is split
into four parts. The first two parts concentrate on teacher
professional development and child learning development; the third
part pools research studies creating and evaluating designed
learning situations; and the fourth part bridges focuses on
parent-child-interaction.
