This book explores the history of medicine in the Baltic Sea region and provides different answers to one central question: How has the circulation of knowledge in the Baltic Sea region influenced medicine as a discipline, and illness as an experience, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? The anthology consists of ten chapters that shed new light on how medical ideas and devices were developed in different contexts. Als Objekt der Verhandlungen zwischen Wissensdiskursen erscheint Alter(n) als ein ebenso heterogenes wie problematisches Phanomen, das von Werturteilen und Weltanschauungen bestimmt wird. Des Weiteren sind Alter(n) und Medizin in der offentlichen Meinung moderner Gesellschaften eng miteinander verbunden. Wie formulierten, konstituierten und verbreiteten Wissenschaftler zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts eine Biomedizin im Sinne eines physiko-chemischen, technischen Verstandnisses der Lebensprozesse? Dieser Frage geht Heiner Fangerau nach, indem er den Einsatz des deutsch-amerikanischen Physiologen Jacques Loeb fur eine internationale biomedizinische Grundlagenforschung analysiert. Am Beispiel dieses Forschers, der zu den ersten Wissenschaftlern zahlt, die u.a. am Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research die Idee der Biomedizin verkorperten, untersucht der Autor die externen Bedingungen, die um 1900 den Etablierungsprozess dieses Konzeptes begleiteten. Daruber hinaus pruft der Autor, durch welche internen Prozesse die Wissenschaft sich ihre Gegenstande selbst formte. Im Zuge dieser differenzierten Betrachtung werden die Forschungsleistung von Jacques Loeb und sein Einsatz fur eine "Technische Biologie" als Basis der modernen Biomedizin transparent. Neben der Ausformulierung der Forschungsthemen von Jacques Loeb bietet die Monographie eine Darstellung seiner Epistemologie und seiner Methoden zur Generierung von Wissen. Loebs Weltanschauung, seine Ethik, sein soziales Engagements sowie sein Eintreten fur die internationale Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft werden eingehend dokumentiert, seine sozialen Netzwerke und Denkkollektive werden rekonstruiert und visualisiert. Abschliessend untersucht die grundlegende Studie die Wirkung des Lebens und der Leistungen von Jacques Loeb auf die breitere Offentlichkeit. Intracerebral interventions raise particular ethical issues. For instance, attempts at replacing lost or altered brain cells with the help of stem cells or the therapeutic application of Deep Brain Stimulation would have morally relevant implications. Many medically relevant questions and ethical concerns need to be clarified before these intracerebral interventions can become routine procedure: If the brain is conceived as the carrier of an individual's personality or of the self then operations on the brain can be seen as intrusions upon one's personality. The book addresses historical, philosophical, social and legal implications of these new developments in the neurosciences and aims at resolving some of the dilemmas that go hand in hand with "implanted minds".
