Wolfgang Krause was one of the founders of German-language
runology. The study of runes can uncover clues about everyday
ancient life as well as about linguistic history a cultural study
at the juncture between linguistics, philology, archaeology, and
history."
The Icelandic historian, poet, and politician Snorri Sturluson was
an exceptional figureof the Nordic Middle Ages. The essays by
renowned scholars gathered in this volume present the current state
of research on Sturluson while also suggesting new approaches. In
addition to examining questions related to the history of religion,
they consider issuesregarding the nature of biography, the history
of science, and historical text transmission.
2007 saw the completion of the Reallexikon der Germanischen
Altertumskunde. This volume takes stock of developments and brings
together the fields of archeology, history, philology and numerous
natural sciences. The themes in the book address current topics,
methods and new sources.
Compared to other medieval philologies, the particular nature of
the literature of the North, and in particular of Iceland, has
always meant that the study of Old Norse languages must be
interdisciplinary and rely on methodical variety. This volume,
published on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the Munich old
Norse scholar, Kurt Schier, contains some three dozen studies on
the mythology, history of religion, literature and poetry of the
North, as well as runic and onomastic studies, and so reflects the
broad thematic spectrum of modern old Nordic studies.
Das Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde tragt den Namen
seines Begrunders, des Anglisten und Naturwissenschaftlers Johannes
Hoops. Zwischen 1972 und 2008 erschienen in zweiter, vollkommen
veranderter Auflage 35 Bande sowie zwei Registerbande. Konzipiert
This anniversary edition means that the work, which has been out of
print for so long, is now available again and has also been
republished in paperback. It contains an unaltered reprint of 20
papers by acknowledged international authorities in the fields of
archaeology, history and philology. The papers were originally
delivered at a symposium held by the Commission for Central and
Northern European Antiquities of the GAttingen Academy of sciences
(1983). The volume aims to improve knowledge and understanding of
the findings and approaches of the various disciplines to the topic
of Germanic culture. Questions of sources and their interpretation
run right through the book. The questions are as topical now as
they were in 1986, and this volume still provides marvellous
insights into the substantive and methodological versatility of
research in Germanic studies.

A collection of fresh essays examining the wide scope and
significance of early Germanic culture and literature. The first
volume of this set views the development of writing in German with
respect to broad aspects of the early Germanic past, drawing on a
range of disciplines including archaeology, anthropology, and
philology in addition toliterary history. The first part considers
the whole concept of Germanic antiquity and the way in which it has
been approached, examines classical writings about Germanic origins
and the earliest Germanic tribes, and looks at thetwo great
influences on the early Germanic world: the confrontation with the
Roman Empire and the displacement of Germanic religion by
Christianity. A chapter on orality -- the earliest stage of all
literature -- provides a bridgeto the earliest Germanic writings.
The second part of the book is devoted to written Germanic --
rather than German -- materials, with a series of chapters looking
first at the Runic inscriptions, then at Gothic, the first Germanic
language to find its way onto parchment (in Ulfilas's Bible
translation). The topic turns finally to what we now understand as
literature, with general surveys of the three great areas of early
Germanic literature: Old Norse, Old English, and Old High and Low
German. A final chapter is devoted to the Old Saxon Heliand.
Contributors: T. M. Andersson, Heinrich Beck, Graeme Dunphy, Klaus
Düwel, G. Ronald Murphy, Adrian Murdoch, Brian Murdoch, Rudolf
Simek, Herwig Wolfram. Brian Murdoch and Malcolm Read both teach in
the German Department of the University of Stirling in Scotland.
