Allgemeine VorbemerkUng. Wenn wir die Musik grundlich studieren
wollen, so kommt es vor alle, n Dingen darauf an, dars wir einen
richtigen Ausgangspunkt fUr unsere Betrachtungen nehmen, damit uns
klar wird, was Musik eigentlich ist. Denn wenn wir SchUler und
Studenten, und oft auch Musiker von Fach darnach fragen, die die
Musik zu ihrem Lebens- beruf geWl1hlt haben, oder wlthlen wollen,
so werden wir selten eine befrledigende Antwort erhalten; es werden
h5chstens ErkHtrungen zu Wege gebracht, wie wir sie in
musikalischen Handbuchern, z. B. in dem sehr achtbaren Lexikon von
ARREY VON DOMMER: tin den, wo es heisst: "Musik, Musica = Tonkunst,
die Kunst durch inhaltsvolle (?) Tonbewegung GefUhle und
Vorstellungen auszudrucken und in uns zu erwecken: " Oder bei HUGO
RIEMANN in seiner Allgemeinen Musiklehre so: "Musik ist die Kunst,
welche durch geordnete Ton- verbindungen die Seele bewegt und dem
auffassenden Geiste l1sthe- tische Lust gewahrt, jenes durch ihren
Inhalt, dieses durch ihre Form'" Auf die Frage: was ist Musik?
giebt es nur eine Antwort, aus der sich alles andere, auch das'
Wesen der Instrumentalmusik, ableiten lllsst, namlich: "Musik ist
Gesang. " Heutzutage wirddiese Antwort vielen allerdings
uberraschend erscheinen, da man seit langer Zeit vielfach Musik
macht, ohne zu singen. Vielleicht werden auch viele meiner Leser
Clavier, Violine oder irgend ein anderes Instrument spielen, -
undauch diese werden von sich sagen, sie machen Musik. Und dies ist
auch gewisserma[sen richtig.
