The art of the last 150 years has hitherto been regarded primarily as a result of revolutionary changes in seeing. Modernity has therefore been interrogated insufficiently with respect to its contents. This publication shows that older and extremely old resources-topics like regulation of form-take on new importance in art by living from and in the interplay between art and philosophy, the natural sciences and an expanded way of seeing. Western art is put in relation to world cultures. The examinations follow in the tradition of iconological research, but depart from it through taking into account how the normative is relativized by the individual. The results maintain an intentionally critical distance to purported progressivity as well as to reactionary opinions.
This well-presented and richly illustrated study of Etruscan history and culture is based around a catalogue of Etruscan artworks and artefacts from an exhibition held in Hamburg in 2004. The exhibits, which include wall paintings, tombs, ceramics, metalwork, armour and weapons, mirrors and everyday items, are all presented in colour photographs with a full description. Background essays place the objects in their setting, discussing Etruscan culture, grave goods, wall paintings and tombs and Etruscan archaeology.
Auguste Rodin conquered the German art scene through a series of exhibitions in Dresden, Munich, Berlin, Leipzig, Weimar and Dusseldorf. Rodin's art was first purchased by a German museum in 1894. But it wasn't his art alone that fascinated scholars and the public alike. The unique way of presenting the sculptures in combination with Rodin's sketches and fragments provided insight into the artist's process of creation, letting visitors of the exhibition virtually step into the master's atelier.
