Stakeholder Democracy - Represented Democracy in a Time of Fear (Hardcover): Felix Dodds Stakeholder Democracy - Represented Democracy in a Time of Fear (Hardcover)
Felix Dodds; Contributions by Laura Schmitz; Foreword by Helen Clark; Contributions by Jan-Gustav Strandenaes, Minu Hemmati, …
R4,148 Discovery Miles 41 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the context of sustainable development, this book describes how we are moving from representative to participatory democracy, and how we are now in a "stakeholder democracy," which is working to strengthen represented democracy in a time of fear. Since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit the idea of stakeholder democracy has grown, with stakeholders engaged in helping governments and intergovernmental bodies make better decisions, and in helping them to deliver those decisions in partnerships amongst various stakeholders, with and without government. Seen through a multi-stakeholder, sector and level lens, this book describes the history of the development of stakeholder democracy, particularly in the area of sustainable development. The authors draw on more than twenty-five years of experience to review, learn from and make recommendations on how best to engage stakeholders in policy development. The book illustrates successful practical examples of multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs) to implement agreements and outline elements of an MSP Charter. This will provide a benchmark for partnerships, enabling those being developed to understand what the necessary quality standards are and to understand what is expected in terms of transparency, accountability, financial reporting, impact and governance. The book is essential reading for professionals and trainees engaging in multi-stakeholder processes for policy development and to implement agreements. It will also be useful for students of sustainable development, politics and international relations.

How Canadians Communicate, Vol. 2 - Media, Globalization and Identity (Paperback): Kenneth J. Goldstein How Canadians Communicate, Vol. 2 - Media, Globalization and Identity (Paperback)
Kenneth J. Goldstein; Edited by David Taras; Contributions by Will Straw, Stephen Kline, Graham Longford, …
R1,202 Discovery Miles 12 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the first volume of How Canadians Communicate the editors examined and assessed the health of Canada's cultural industries circa 2003. In this second volume, they not only undertake a new examination of Canada's current media health, but also turn their attention to analysing the impact of the startling pace of global media proliferation on our country's media institutions. The revolutionary changes underway in mass media technology, from blogs to peer-to-peer networks and the ubiquitous cell-phone, have all imposed structural modifications to global communication systems, inexorably altering the fundamental ways in which Canadians communicate. The editors have carefully chosen essays that address the central issues of today's global media environment from a uniquely Canadian perspective.Grouped under the headings 'The Debate over Policy', 'The Quest for Identity', and 'The Struggle for Control', the topics ranging from media concentration to foreign ownership and the challenge of mass communication in an increasingly multicultural community, underscoring the way in which our media has operated in the past and how it must now adapt to a new media landscape. There is little dou

Women, Equality, Power - Selected speeches from a life of leadership (Hardcover): Helen Clark Women, Equality, Power - Selected speeches from a life of leadership (Hardcover)
Helen Clark

Women, Equality, Power is a celebration of an outstanding leader who continues to strive and work for change, and it's a rallying call for other women leaders, whether they are in positions of political, economic or social power. Helen Clark has been a political leader for more than 40 years, since first running in local elections in the 1970s. She entered New Zealand parliament as a 31-year-old in 1981, led the Labour Party to victory in 1999 and was Prime Minister of New Zealand for nine years. She then took on a critical international role as Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme in New York. One of her key focuses throughout this time has been the empowerment of women, and she has paved the way for other women to step up and lead. With a foreword by the Rt Hon. Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, this is a timely and important book. 'If more issues of importance to women are to rise to the top of political, legislative and budget priorities, more women must sit at the top tables . . . Women must be drivers of development - not just passive beneficiaries of plans designed by others.' HELEN CLARK ONZ 'Helen Clark often said, and continues to say, that having women in leadership positions not only sends a powerful message to other women but also changes societies' perceptions of gender roles and encourages girls to believe that no door is closed to them.' JACINDA ARDERN, PRIME MINISTER OF NEW ZEALAND

The Europa Lectures, 2002-2014 - From Enlargement to Crisis (Hardcover): Martin Holland, Serena Kelly The Europa Lectures, 2002-2014 - From Enlargement to Crisis (Hardcover)
Martin Holland, Serena Kelly; Contributions by Terry Wynn, Helen Clark, Lord Patten Of Barnes, …
R3,281 Discovery Miles 32 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Commencing in 2001, the Europa Lecture has become a high-profile fixture on the EU-New Zealand calendar. As witnessed by the fifteen lectures reproduced in this new volume, the speakers were selected for both their high-level profile as well as their importance to this bilateral dialogue. This volume includes speeches from three Prime Ministers, a President, four European Commissioners as well as four Foreign Ministers both European and New Zealanders. Each lecture, naturally, reflects the important issues of their day and cumulatively they produced a unique record of how EU-New Zealand relations have evolved, matured and continued to converge since the start of the new millennium. The earlier lectures reflect a general optimism in the European integration project, perhaps best highlighted by the historic enlargement of 1st May 2004. However, with the onset of the global financial crisis and then subsequent Eurozone debt crisis, the anticipated trajectory towards a supranational "ever closer union" was interrupted and the EU found itself confronting a period of both internal and external criticism and anxiety. It was in these less than auspicious times that significant effort towards enhancing New Zealand's bilateral relations with the EU gained momentum. These initiatives are expected to bear fruit in 2016 with the signing of a Partnership Agreement on Relations and Cooperation and - BREXIT not withstanding - a fully-fledged EU-NZ Free Trade Agreement before 2020. This collection of lectures ends just as the rise in Euroscepticism became evident and the first serious murmurings of BREXIT could be detected within British politics. The impact the UK's decision will have on EU-New Zealand relations remains uncertain although, as the introductory chapter to this volume suggests, since 2015 New Zealand's media have seemingly begun to conflate coverage of the EU as being tantamount to BREXIT. If this trend does come to dominate the New Zealand media landscape then Kiwi perceptions towards Europe run a risk of becoming unbalanced and a "Back to the Future" perspective reflecting the difficulties of the 1970s may again come shape perceptions.
