PAPERBACK FOR SALE IN AFRICA ONLY Imagined or actual returns to a "homeland" in African literature are examined in relation to changing concepts of identity, belonging, migration and space. This special issue focuses on literary texts by African writers in which the protagonist returns to his/her "original" or ancestral "home" in Africa from other parts of the world. Ideas of return - intentional and actual - have been a consistent feature of the literature of Africa and the African diaspora: from Equiano's autobiography in 1789 to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's 2013 novel Americanah. African literature has represented returnees in a range of locations and dislocations including having a sense of belonging, being alienated in a country they can no longer recognize, or experiencing a multiple sense of place. Contributors, writing on literature from the 1970s to thepresent, examine the extent to which the original place can be reclaimed with or without renegotiations of "home". GUEST EDITORS: HELEN COUSINS, Reader in Postcolonial Literature at Newman University, Birmingham, UK;PAULINE DODGSON-KATIYO, was formerly Head of English at Newman University, Birmingham, UK, and Dean of the School of Arts at Anglia Ruskin University. Series Editor: Ernest Emenyonu is Professor of Africana Studies atthe University of Michigan-Flint, USA. Reviews Editor: Obi Nwakanma

After the Ceremonies - New and Selected Poems (Paperback): Ama Ata Aidoo After the Ceremonies - New and Selected Poems (Paperback)
Ama Ata Aidoo; Edited by Helen Yitah

Ama Ata Aidoo is one of the best-known African writers today. Spanning three decades of work, the poems in this collection address themes of colonialism, independence, motherhood, and gender in intimate, personal ways alongside commentary on broader social issues. After the Ceremonies is arranged in three parts: new and uncollected poems, some of which Aidoo calls "misplaced or downright lost"; selections from Aidoo's An Angry Letter in January and Other Poems; and selections from Someone Talking to Sometime. Although Aidoo is best known for her novels Changes: A Love Story and Our Sister Killjoy, which are widely read in women's literature courses, and her plays The Dilemma of a Ghost and Anowa, which are read and performed all over the world, her prowess as a poet shines in this collection.

Throwing Stones in Jest (Paperback): Helen Yitah Throwing Stones in Jest (Paperback)
Helen Yitah
R1,675 Discovery Miles 16 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this interesting critical analysis of oral literature, in which she draws on field work, Helen Yitah discusses the place of proverbs in the social praxis of her native Ghanaian culture. She observes that the traditional tenor of proverbs is loaded with sexist implications designed to relegate women to the status of second class citizens. Adopting a feminist reading of the use of proverbs, Yitah argues that due to their subaltern position in society, women's use of proverbs is more subversive than that of their male counterparts. Yitah posits that Kasena women not only manipulate proverbs differently but also create what she calls "counter proverbs" that are used to draw attention to the female condition as well as challenge certain norms established by the dominant patriarchy. This is innovative work that revalorizes the place of African oral traditions in contemporary society.
